Having owned a TM-TWIN for nearly 6 months, its finally time for me to do a little write up on it

This is based upon the latest software release 29/03/2012

As per my usual writeups, the box (carton), nice, slick and dark, untill you look at the back, then it looks like someone has just finished watching TRON after smoking something they shouldnt have been, and thought 'I KNOW WHATLL LOOK GOOD ON A BOX.....' millions of little squares as the background. Its no biggie, as the box normally goes in the bin (unless youre me, then it goes in the attic with the rest of the fire hazard im saving up there).

open the box, as per technomates other equipment, its packed to not move in transit, and comes with a power lead, HDMI lead (with gold plated connectors), remote control, batteries, warranty card, and an instruction 'sheet' which explains the basic connections on the receiver, the remote buttons and the specs of the receiver

take the receiver out of the box, and like i usually do, get the screwdriver out.

the receiver has a look thats angular, yet smooth, sharp squared power button on the front, but a row of round buttons on the top, a squared overall profile, but a display window with rounded corners, like a modern retro look which is hard to explain, anyway, back to the fun with the screwdriver. rip the lid off, the cooling fan is attached to the lid, and the connection hints that its adjustable, possibly by software (later confirmed). as per usual for technomate, theres a MEATY power supply built in, where nearly all of the electrolytic capacitors are the more expensive, and more reliable 105'C type, BUT, there are 2 caps on the secondary side of the power supply that are lower rated at 85'C

now the receiver i have is one of the very first ones, and is already over 6 months old, so its possible these may have been changed on newer models, its also possible that they may be lower rated as part of a failsafe system in case of possible overload, but, its just something that i noticed

the connector for a full size SATA HDD is already in place, so i plug in a 500Gb HDD, and manage to screw it into the caddy without having to remove the caddy from the receiver, saved 30 seconds of life there, enough time for a celebratory swig of lager

put the lid back on, and plug it in

my setup (where this receiver is connected) consists of a fixed dish, receiving multiple satellites via DiSEqC switching, and a motorised dish, so i connect my dishes to the 2 feeds, input1 also has an LNB loopthru, a handy feature in some circumstances that not many twin tuner receivers offer, i know that my Duo doesnt have this. I connect up my ethernet connection, HDMI lead, and the power lead, and, just because i can, which is VERY rare now on receivers, i also connect an analogue UHF feed to a secondary TV, as this has a fully functioning RF output as well, its a shame that IR return doesnt work for magic eyes to control rfom a 2nd location, but the additional hardware for this CAN be added externally and costs about £20

So everything is connected, i now download the latest image, unzip it to a USB stick, plug it into the front of the receiver, and power ON

i get a quick linux penguin STARTING screen, then a message on the screen, along the lines of 'USB update found, press OK to update, or wait to boot'

COOL!!!!!!!!

no more accidentally flashing your receiver if you have an update on a memory stick plugged in (which i have done many times, and lost all my settings)

so i press OK, and the screen informs me that its UPDATING, PLEASE WAIT! after a while, it tells me to remove usb and power off. i remove the usb, turn the power off, and leave the receiver off for a few mins, power back up, see the penguin and STARTING, and after about 90 seconds, the enigma2 (sorry, the open embedded software) wizard has started. i go through the usual motions with this wizard, its the same on every E2 based image, set up dish(es) choose NO to parental control, activate network, and less than 20 seconds later, its ready for a channel list

but first

i format the HDD, and mount it via the receivers menu system, eberything goes smoothly, i restart the receiver, and i then FTP in to my new mounted HDD

i FTP over the few usual ipk files that i use (rats channel updater being the main one) as well as a few different media files, i then telnet into the receiver, install the ipk files, and restart enigma, download rats latest channel list from the newly available plugin, and start to watch telly (theres nothing on, lol)

Next i check the media files i FTPd over, a mix of jpeg, bmp, mp3, mp4, avi, divx, ALL of them worked :)

now, normally id also mount a USB flash device to deal with picons and EPG data, but, as the TM-TWIN boasts so much available memory, i didnt bother, so i downloaded picons, restarted enigma, and they were instantly available, next i setup the EPG to download the rytec xml files (for uk only) and about 70 seconds later it had downloaded, parsed, and loaded the entire EPG database, and was all available vie the epg button using the multigraphicalepg, i entered the EPG menu, changed a few settings to the ones i prefer (show PiG) and after an EPG restart, the receiver was setup how i liked it, all thats left to do, is edit in the lines to access my viewing cards

there ARE one or 2 'bugs' in the software, but, unless theres is an EXACT feature you want, that needs to use a specific feature of this receiver, you will probably never find these bugs, so i wont list them, as for most people, its working 100%. I dont like to watch telly, i like to find things that dont work, but, if i wanted this receiver for watching telly, watching media, RECORDING telly, which i will return to, as i have previously RECORDED 5 CHANNELS AT ONCE with no problems, but have yet to try this on this latest image, then theres nothing this receiver cannot do for you

it will also download media directly from youtube, for you to keep for ever, stream online radio stations, stream to networked devices, and most importantly, it WORKS!!

at the moment, there is limited image support, the image is an iQ image based upon OpenViX source code, but, if a few of the 'known' teams get behind this hardware, this could seriously shake the market, its a big but though

Had the twin for a week now, everything just seems to work, had 2 green screens, setup swap file, etc, hav'nt had a problem since, this is what the tm800 should've been

Only 2 post since July 2010? Anyway its a very capable box and will get better when more teams get on board and more images are available.

ggggrrrr I went and bought a vu duo clone as I had talked myself out of buying this, now I want one.

Anyone know if I can change my birthday by deed poll?

Always been a follower of the forum, just had nothing to add to increasingly negative comments, Like most tm800 owners, i hoped they would find a decent solution to its problems, unfortunately the fix was to pay out £229 for a twin

does this dongle work with the receiver Wireless N Netgear WNDA3200 series wireless dongle ,looks a good box

Why ? Does the Duo not have more support more images proven track record and the clone is nearly 100 quid less than the TWIN... Theres nothing to gain by owing a TWIN.
Might make sense if maybe you were looking at something higher spec like a DM8000 quad tuner support etc....

It's not surprising to see that most features work as intended, why wouldnt they ? If you use the same chipsets tht DM, VU etc are using the majority of the work is done for you...in terms of hardware drivers etc. Furthermore if your using an already exisiting image base and just modding it to your needs...any half decent coding team should have minimal issues....

Please give us your comparison of Twin and VU+ to back up your comment nothing to gain by owning a TWIN. I am sure that members would like to know the differences other than just support limited to IQ at present and price.I would think that all boxes have just one software support team at launch others joining in afterwards and manufacturers have a price they need to charge to cover start up cost.

At the moment VU plus original or clone has full support from teams backing it.
It works as well.
No one says twin does not work, but VU is proven.
Is the cam slot working on Twin yet?

Apologies if i misunderstood your meaning. i assumed you were only commenting on the common interface module slot and not card readers in general. Also i dont assume that because people dont have cams that they must be sharing, quite the opposite.

i own an original Vu+ Duo, and a TM-TWIN, and FOR HOW I USE THEM the twin now outdoes the duo, it has zap times that are less than one second, can record 5 (yes five) channels at the same time AND has an RF output

yes the duo has more images available, but i dont watch the boot screen or the OSD (in fact, i dont watch the telly, the kids do, lol)

yes, in the past 2 years, TM linux has been crap, but, THIS box has the potential to cause a lot of ripples in the market, and so far, just about everyone who has had a play with one, has been shocked by the difference between this and other TM linux products

personally, i think its about time the trolling stopped, yes they fcuked up, and yes theyre stil paying for it, but, didnt the clone manufacturers also fook up with the DM800, 13 tuner hardware releases before getting it right, or did everyone forget that?

unless you OWN the hardware, i dont think youre qualified to give an opinion on how it works

it has the fastest zap time ive seen on any receiver, its also faster than slys own DRX890 PVR5 machine

at the moment, no, a CAM doesnt work in it, but, like i said at the very start, it doesnt affect how I use it

agreed, TM have at last produced a belting machine in the TM-TWIN. i do not have one personally but i had a play with one about 6 months ago with a very early ViX image on it. This will no doubt breed more competition into the Dual tuner receiver market and we the end users will be the ones who overall benefit.

Those arguments are the same ones that were used not ao long ago for the TM800 "works fine for how I use it" and "non owners are not allowed to have an opinion"... Everyone will use recievers in a different way and will put put more emphasis/importance on different features. The only real comparisons are do the recievers do everything they say on the box, how do they compare to similar spec recievers from other manufacturers in terms of price, features, support, performance ?
The only valid points i've seen so far is... zap times less than 1 second, ability to record 5 channels at the same time, RF output... Pretty sure Zap times less than 1 second is listed on old school satellite box recievers as far back as Enigma 1 recievers though !
Im not suprised people may have been "shocked" at the difference between the TWIN and other TM Linux products....as they were all pretty poor...not much of a achievement to out do them...
I agree the clone mannufacturers of the 800HD did indeed produce several crap tuner revisions, dont think 13 revisions were ever retailed though I only know of J,K,L3 and M never saw a H rev or below. Difference is though clone manufacturers came good and anyone with a bad tuner could easily swap a plug and play tuner for around 30 quid. I have yet to see TM fix the CCCam server issues on TM500/600 or the multitude of issues on the 800.
Also I think theres a need for much more impartial input on the TWIN, not intrested in listening to the TM Fanboy bridage who have been dished out freebies or are retailers of TM products, or may hold commercial ties to TM.
It is indeed good for their to be more competition to the twin tuner, market...also good to see TM have reversed there price increase and the TWIN is back to it's originally quoted RRP... "currency fluctuations" must have magically stabilised recently....

And I hope that remark was not aimed at me Digidude as I have not said anything detrimental about the twin anywhere on this forum or elsewhere!

I expect price to drop again shortly, like all stb's after release and also to compete with clone VU etc.
Price may drop to £249 maybe and then who knows a lot lower even £199 lol
All speculation of course, but needs to be about a lot longer with more teams supporting it before many will take the plunge.
