Christ there always seems to be problems with technomate receivers

I only posted what was open for everyone on the download centre :)

I just thought it best all twin owners should know

Well at least this time they are rectifying issues asap.

Well i hope so Manic because before i comitte in the future to buy one I want to know all is working correct it's a lot of money each time to be messed about , my TM800HD cost me £245 when it first come out a year later and there £135, this new Twin is £279 and already there are problems with image etc , think I'll wait untill the price drips before buying this time because i am fed up with having to sort issues out all the time with BER and Lip sync issues it's becoming a pain in the arse.

Have a look here m8 .. VU+ Section

Do yourself a favour and get a decent box

ive just had quite a long conversation about this, and it looks like something has been lost in translation

while going through settings on my twin and duo, along with person on other end of the phone going through the same settings on both a twin and duo, it is NOT a swap file that needs setting up

i have no swapfile running on my duo

where the confusion has come from, is from MOUNTING a usb stick to deal with EPG and PVR functions (which a lot of people do as standard)

if you use the twin, for PVR functions, storing EPG, picons ETC, all to internal flash ONLY, then like other boxes, the flash evenbtually fills up, and problems start to arise, i used to get this, its why i recommend to everyone, no matter what receiver they have, to put a USB stick in for EPG, picons and PVR / timethifting

so to clarify, it is not an actual memory issue requiring a swap file to act as a buffer, but a storage issue, which is normal, and overcome by using a USB device, which a lot of people do as standard for certain tasks

i use high speed USB on both my duo and dm800 for this very reason

so its like the internal flash getting built up like on the SE, when crossepg reverts from USB to internal Flash :)

is that what you mean Dude

pretty much m8 yes, untill in the end so much internal flash has been used up by things that the box doesnt really need to be running, that it then starts to affect other functions of the receiver

i dont know wether somethings been lost in translation or misunderstood when the write up was being produced, but its deffo NOT a swap file thats being used, but a usb mount for things like EPG and timeshifting

please don't take this as a dig coz its not

but that's some memory being used considering it has so much more than other receivers

i dont know the exact figures, but if using only a UK EPG, then its about 13Mb per update, if using timeshifting, then it would depend on the bitrate and content of the channel youre watching, and if its HD, this will at a minimum quadruple the flash useage if not kept on usb, eventually, if the used memory is not dumped, itll fill up, this is why most people who use EPG and timeshifting use usb devices, i do it on my dm800 and my duo, as if i dont, its just too unstable

i think that somewhere between the image being created, and the image being released, theres been a misunderstanding between what a swap file and what a mount is or does, and thats why this sort of write up has come about

its a 'normal' thing to use usb for flash intensive things like EPG, picons, timeshifting on dreamboxes, Vu receivers, and i personally recommend it to others, to make the receiver more stable, no matter what the receiver is

i do think this is a case of bad communication between the image makers, and those responsible for releasing the image, and those in the community who actually know what means what, have read what the release says, even though that may not have been what it meant

I totally agree about using USB over flash for storing epg, picons and timeshift mate I do myself on SE makes sense :)

unless its changed on later images I think it was epg where I didn't have the option to save to USB so it had to be save to flash ?

its good to see its being sorted though thats the main thing :)

LOL so no swap file needed and infact what they saying is usb mounting is fixed which is good as you dont have to have your hdd constantly spinning. I will be flashing latest image as I already use usb to store epg and picons anyway.

I've already installed this image, and after reading this thread I installed a USB stick to try and put the EPG on it (BTW, I already have a 500Gb drive installed for recording, but didn't want to use that for EPG). However, when I go to "Main Menu > System > EPG > Settings...." I don't seem to be able to change the "EPG location" setting (nothing happens, not even options for HDD or USB!).

Having just read the instructions posted at the start of the thread, am I right in thinking that this all needs to be set up BEFORE flashing to the new image? Under "Main Menu > Setup > System > System Manager > Swap Manager" I don't seem to be able to select "enable swap at startup", and can't activate (it says "Swap file not found. You have to create the file before to activate").

I dont think you have any options with this image to use anything other than internal flash for epg/picons

I think a newer image release is on the cards any day now where you have the option to save to HDD but still not USB

Hmmm, don't really want to keep re-flashing the image, because it seems to wipe EVERYTHING you had on there before (eg bouquets, CCcam settings, etc).

I guess saving EPG and stuff to HDD is not too much of a problem, seeing as I already have a HDD in there, but sometimes I've had to disconnect the HDD just so that the box will boot up rather than get stuck on a green screen (it seems as though the way they use for mounting the HDD can cause problems if you reboot when the HDD is being accessed, as it seems to lock the HDD).

In general though, I'm loving this box. However, I *am* new to sat boxes, having moved over from MediaCenter PCs and MythTV...

what image are you using ? (date)
you have to unplug the HDD to get the box to boot ? otherwise it green screens ?
