Just hooked up a DM 500 clone to mess with. Downloaded Dreambox live to my Ipad. Streams perfectly with full control. How is it a €45 box can do this and a TM 800 HD €210 cant. Strange dont you think.

Nope not strange at all... Dream invest a lot of cash into software development with broadcom for hardware and drivers and image development teams to produce quality software, they are also the main contributor to Enigma1 and Engima2 even though it's open source. While there hardware may not always be fantastic..and the selling price on original Dream gear is ridiculously high..they have to re-coup their software development costs somehow. Clones for end users are a win/win situation...dirt cheap, factory produced machine soldered PCBS so despite what people say the quality of manufacture is quite good.

TM800 on the other hand..where to start,.... wrong choice of hardware for starters as Jimux verified the NXP chip was desgned for TV's with built in satellite decoding....Not designed to run linux or for use in STB's ...on top of that not properly tested to run linux or have complete chipset drivers ready before launch...hence ongoing issues with SATA, need for JTAG etc etc...who knows vould even still be underlying hardware issues. Then add to the mix the utter muppets at UR TEAM headiing ip the software side of things....trying to "bodge" a Dreambox PLI image to work on NXP chipset...without first having a complete and tested driver base...

Not surprising really considering this is a rebadge of an ITGate product, read around other forums...ITGate have a track rcord of pumping out hardware with non-existant or very poor software support.. Their cable recievers were the same... Then add to the mix Dr Linux ... I didnt think it was possible for anyone to talk more rubbish than a certain albanian who deals in boxes of the 8 legged variety...but hey I was wrong !

Utterly magic response and the one I was hoping for. Why oh Why do they continue to dig this hole deeper and deeper for themselves. Roll on DM800 clone.

TM are not rebadged iTgate receivers, theyre both made in the same factory for release in different markets, like clarktech and non linux technomates, spiderboxes and mvision

dbox2's (neutrino and enigma1) were streaming long before dream existed
All the software was started by the tuxbox boys so really dream did the same to the tuxbox boys as tm are doing to dream.

But it is shamefull that the streaming doesn't work as it's very old technology.

I agree with that, Dbox2 did start it all off. I missed the whole Dbox2 thing by the time I was intrested decent dbox2 were hard to get hold of or people were selling them at silly prices on fleebay... By then the the Clone Dm500 were out higher spec for less cash.

this is one thing thats always struck a chord in my mind. people say 'DMM pay soooo much money into R&D of both software and hardware, thats what makes them the best' and then they finish off with 'thats why id buy a clone'

the clones are pure leeches, more so than receivers like TM, Vu+, Extrend, and any others. the clones are blatant rip offs of the originals, and contribute NOTHING back into the scene OR the hobby for people who are actually into it for the hobby, instead of just free / cheap viewing

DMM clones and commercial card servers, the cancers of the true satellite hobbyist that in the end WILL destroy the 'hobby' for everyone

to add to what i already posted about the clones. if theyre so quality made etc. i bought my original DM800 the week they were released, it gets a little warm all on its own, but still works brilliantly for what i want.

the clones have been through about a dozen different hardware revisions just on the tuner alone, the mainboard has undergone quite a few hardware changes as well, including updated voltage rectifiers, capacitor fixes, heatsinks, fans, to name a few that are obvious between early and newer clones, the people who have paid for this development are the ones who bought the first, unuseable, clones, and are stuck with them

the software itself is open source, only the brand name 'enigma' (for use in DVB receivers) is 'owned' by DMM, and as pointed out, they took advantage of the open source GPL that surrounds it all to use with their hardware

when DMM stops all R&D as its not economically sound for them to continue to do so, who will be shouting the loudest about it? the clone owners, connected to their dirt cheap servers, who havent helped with a single cent towards the development, who will it affect the most? the true hobbyists, who do it for the hobby of it, not to save a few quid

I ended up buying a FreeviewHD Smartbox for my streaming
streamed all my Photos and Music through WMP11 but had problems with Video
email Fetch and withing 30 minutes had an email telling what to do (downloaded TVersity) now streams everything perfectly :) twin tuner freeview HD to boot
audio levels are same, SD is not louder than HD
recoding is perfect
pause. RW live tv faultless
record and set timers from my iphone
and loads more I wont bore you with
cost me £130
MIPS chip running a custom Linux

what this box does is what I bought the 800 to do, and if I was 100% honest I don't think it ever will :( I like you am stuck with a box that cost me £250 that is good for watching tv on, but hey Im slowly getting used to it now and know I have to live with it

this is not a moan :) its the truth and how many feel, and I really don't want it to turn into another slagging thread coz they are boring lol

Digi, I have bought technomate all my satellite life, when I bought the TM800hd I would have thought that basic features would work out off the box and the hobby would be fiddeling with it to do other things. But its a piece of crap for the money. I have a DM 600 original and 2 tm 500 in other rooms in the house. I dont deal with card servers and never will. This is my first time to buy clones as I dont see a choice. The DM originals are way overpriced. The main reason for this was not so much the 800 not working but the attitude towards people by a certain member of this forum. I havent supplied many linux boxes to people but when they ask it was always technomate, as as soon as I would give them a price for DM they would laugh. Does this mean that I am a leach and havent contributed to the hobby. If it wrerent for what they can do which is watch programmes on the cheap they wouldent sell a single unit no matter what the brand.

It would help a great deal if they compiled the streaming support software with the correct libraries. And I'm getting a little weary of bug finding for paid 'software engineers'.

I agree the earlier clones were poor with many tuner issues if your talking specifically about DM800HD clones . Not the case with Dm500, 600 clones though the newer 500HD, 800SE and 8000 clones also seem to have been recieved quite well so far even though theyre still quite new.

If DMM stops all R&D owners will be left with a reciever that functions as it should and carries out all the functions that it claims to, clone owners certainly wont complain they have had more than their moneys worth. Owners of originals will have a right to complain having paid a high cost and maybe expect continued support. Theres still support for discontinued DM500 with a OpenPLI night build...so I dont see any issues with support anytime soon.

I dont see any other manufacturers paying for development either (VU, Clarketech, Tm etc ).most of them just "leech" and mod DM images and use similar broadcom hardware. The linux STB scene would have been almost dead after the DBOX2 if Dream hadnt stepped in poured some cash into it.

PayServers is a completely different kettle of fish.... when you get TM releasing the 800HD with non working card readers (which took 9 months to fix), then a certain person clainming it doesnt matter because 98% of them are sold to pre-configged box sellers AKA payserver traders.. what does that tell you. Clone DM 500s on the other hand offer people the oppurtunity to set up their own cheap server for small closed rings without having to use payservers. The problem with payservers is that people too lazy to bother learning to set up their own servers and keeping small private rings..they want the wasy way out.. Then there will always be the greedy traders that are happy to proivsde the service where theres the demand.
