Computer security firm AVG is coming under fire for its recently updated privacy policy. The new policy explicitly allows the retention of browser history and the ability to sell that information on to third parties. While the new policy doesn’t come into effect until the 15th of October, it has already caught the eye of privacy advocates........................

....................How much of an impact this has on AVG, the world's third largest antivirus vendor, remains to be seen. With users being accustomed to clicking ‘Agree’ on license agreements and privacy policies without so much as glancing at the document; it is unlikely many will have knowledge of their acceptance of this practice.

AVG can sell your browsing and search history to advertisers

Security firm AVG can sell search and browser history data to advertisers in order to "make money" from its free antivirus software, a change to its privacy policy has confirmed..............................

..................................... "Antivirus software runs on our devices with elevated privileges so it can detect and block malware, adware, spyware and other threats," he told WIRED. "It is utterly unethical to [the] highest degree and a complete and total abuse of the trust we give our security software." Hanff urged people using AVG's free antivirus to "immediately uninstall the product and find an alternative".

Thanks for this @idrob I have used AVG for years and always been happy with it, but this activity is something I totally disagree with and so will be uninstalling AVG as soon as I find a suitable replacement.

Perhaps this should also be in the Main News Section where even more members will read about it !!

Typically I once again didn't read it properly - as I have the paid edition it doesn't effect me.

It does make me laugh though how people just expect things for free these days. That's someones hard work, giving you a service for free because you're too tight to actually put your hand in your pocket and pay a few quid for probably the only thing on your machine worthwhile that saves your arse several times a day - and then begrudge them for trying to recoup something... how many of these freeloaders would be prepared to go to work Monday morning and do their job for the next 3 months without any wages?

Also with regards to the scaremongering and selective highlighted "quotes" all over the internet, they forget to mention other parts of the article such as (paraphrasing) "other companies already do it but its buried in legalese t&c's", or "any personal identifying data would be cleansed", or that "you can opt out without any loss of service or functionality, or request deletions"

Oh my the villagers do love a gathering with their burning torches claiming human rights violations. Put up, Pay up, Opt out or drop out and take your chances with some other freebie who's policies aren't written in favor of your comprehension and are probably already riffling through your knicker draw :)

your post clocking will no doubt not earn you brownie points
