BT will add 54,000 premises to its rollout of superfast broadband in Scotland, taking the total number of homes and businesses passed by high-speed services to 270,000.

BT has already connected 216,000 premises to its fibre services and has now confirmed that thousands more in areas covering the Outer Hebrides and the islands of Mull and Bute will be added to the network.

Moray, Highland, East and West Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire will also be covered by services that offer speeds as high as 80Mbps. The first connections are expected to be live and open for orders from the summer.

Around 5,000 premises in the Outer Hebrides should be able to access services by the summer as the local network rollout takes place.

This work is a continuation of the installation of 250km of sub-sea cables in the Scottish Highlands and Islands that was completed last year, as shown below.

John Swinney, deputy first minister for Scotland, said that the rollout is proof that the funding from various sources, including the UK government and BT, is paying dividends for citizens in the areas being covered.

“We’re reaching out to those who would not have been covered through the commercial market in cities, towns and some of our most rural areas. The connections will bring benefits to the Scottish people at home and in business,” he said.

Brendan Dick, director of BT Scotland, explained that the progress made by BT last year had given the company a great platform to continue its work in Scotland this year.

“The completion of our massive sub-sea cable laying programme has allowed us to make early inroads into delivering fibre for some of our island communities well ahead of schedule,” he said.

The Scotland rollout is just one initiative being carried out by BT to boost broadband speeds.

The company announced last week that it will begin testing broadband speeds as high as 500Mbps using G.Fast technology at two trial locations in the summer.
