Jenson Button won't race in F1 in 2017, but could still return in 2018
Stoffel Vandoorne confirmed as Fernando Alonso's team-mate at McLaren in 2017; McLaren retain option on Button for 2018
Jenson Button will not race in Formula 1 in 2017 - but could return to the grid in 2018 with McLaren after agreeing a new two-year deal at the team.

Stoffel Vandoorne will instead race alongside Fernando Alonso next season.

After months of speculation over his future, the 36-year-old Button announced at Monza on Saturday what could only amount to a sabbatical from racing after agreeing a revised deal which includes the option of returning to the grid with the team in 2018.

"I definitely need a break," Button told a news conference. "In 2018 the team have an option for me to drive.
McLaren described the new arrangement as a "innovative three-driver strategy" which keeps all three drivers on their books for at least another season.

"There is no reason why he [Button] shouldn't come back and race in 2018," said McLaren chairman Ron Dennis.

"This is an innovative way of keeping all the advantages by having Jenson still in the team.

"We will see where are in a year. Jenson doesn't have a desire to drive for other F1 teams. He had offers from other teams for next season but rejected them."

The Formula 1 gossip column

Button has been heavily linked with a return to Williams but confirmed: "I have no intention of ever driving for another Formula 1 team."
Alonso's contract expires at the end of next season and the Spaniard has said he will only consider his own F1 future after he experiences next season's revised F1 cars.

McLaren's option on Button for 2018 can therefore be regarded as an 'insurance policy' if Alonso decides to walk away - or if Vandoorne struggles.

"It's the perfect solution for the circumstances which exist in our team," added Dennis
Button is the most experienced driver on the current grid having made his debut in the sport with Williams in 2000. After winning his sole world title with Brawn in 2009, the Briton joined McLaren in 2010 and has won eight races for the Woking team.

"To be clear, I'm very definitely not retiring," Button added. "I'm contracted for both 2017 and 2018, I intend to work hard on car-development, and I'm sure I'll get behind the wheel of the new car at some point."

quite surprised at this. I figured he might be at williams but didnt think anything like this would happen. I bet and I hope that sky approach him to help present or just have something to do with the team. Jenson does well in front of the camera , is quite funny and knows what he is talking about

after the fiasco at McLaren last year keeping button waiting until the last minute, this didn't come to much of a surprise to me.

and as to going to Williams, why ? no point if you ask me, not only as it will be a step backwards and why would Williams replace an older driver with an older driver surely the way forward for Williams is to get a up and coming young driver to be around for a while to develop the cars for years to come and not just for 1 year.

and as for jenson being still on the books for next season is just a cushion for the fans and media to soften the blow for jenson retiring.

jenson has been good for the sport no doubt but there comes a time when you must hang up your boots and bow out gracefully :)

It's alarming that now Button and Massa will be gone.
Raikkonen and Alonso are now the elder statesmen and after them it's actually Lewis Hamilton!
That's such a shock to think about because I remember when all of these guys were young kids coming into the sport.

and tbh will Alonso and Raikkonen be racing the season after ? I dout .... I'm a believer at bringing young talent through the ranks,
but we still need a good mix of young and experienced drivers in the field for the fans to follow ...
the sport is dying as it is and with no one for the fans to follow will hurt the sport even more.

You are right but the way f1 is now , what are the odds of the best driver picking up an empty seat? It is more likely a pay driver would appear. There are current good drivers that bring a cheque with them right now. Some of them might surprise you also. Alonso and Perez bring certain sponsors with them.

Based on today I'd rather see Alonso being the one to take a sabbatical.

Well, it's quite clear that Button is going, but I guess we'll be seeing him in WEC rather than F1 next time. As Ron asked him to take a year off, I think he'll be overly lucky to get back in the seat. Especially if McL gets their sh.. together in '17!

would be great to see him in a cat again, but I think we all know this isn't going to happen.

any thoughts on Button being asked to race Indy before Alonso was ?

In a cat? :Yikes: Shall we move this one over to the Adult room guys?. We need to get to the bottom of this one.The cats bottom I presume.:)

He is doing endurance racing last I heard. No animals were hurt though as far as I know

I saw him recently do an interview with DC where both agreed they had no interest whatsoever in oval racing.

True.
He doesn't like ovals, and has said on multiple occasions he has no interest in racing one.
The increased risk of racing ovals is what doesn't agree with him. I heard him say in an interview his family wouldn't let him do it even if he wanted to!
Would be VERY surprised if he even considered it

Yeah I'm just thinking it would make sence for McLaren to ask Jence first, why would the pull Alonso out of the Monaco GP when they have Button on their books too, hes been paid for the year so I'm just thinking they may have wanted to use him, he did say he knew what the call was when it came so some thing must have prompted it.
