Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville will join Sky Sports next season as a replacement for Andy Gray, who was sacked by the broadcaster in January after a sexism storm.

Neville, 36, retired from football at the start of 2011 after a stellar playing career that saw him pick up 15 major trophies at United and win 83 caps with England.

He professed to being "thrilled" at joining Sky Sports as a pundit from the start of the 2011/12 season. The appointment follows Neville's appearance last month in the Sky Sports studio for the Euro 2012 Qualifier between Wales and England

In a statement, the former right-back said: "[Sky] has always been leading the way in football coverage. Now I have retired this feels like the perfect way for me to stay involved in football and I am looking forward to bringing my 19 years of match experience into television."

Sky Sports managing director Barney Francis added: "Gary will bring vast experience at the top level of domestic and European football from nearly two decades with Manchester United.

"He will give our viewers great insight when he joins our team next season working on Barclays Premier League, UEFA Champions League and Carling Cup football."

Neville will act as a replacement for Andy Gray, who was embroiled in a scandal earlier in the year alongside former Sky Sports anchorman Richard Keys after sexist comments they made off-air were leaked onto the internet.

Gray was sacked for the ensuing controversy, while Keys later opted to resign from his post. Both men have since joined the UTV Media-owned radio station TalkSport.

interesting, he wouldnt be my choice as he comes across a bit slow and you need more enthusiasm for the role, but with most presenters they grow on you, except for lineker

Same here mate but I'll give him a chance too.
HH.

thought it was still april 1st when i heard the "good" news.

tbh its a bit to soon after he has finished, he has only just got dry from the last shower at old trafford on his last game.

its going to be very hard for him to be objective he has been a 1 team man (which i do admire in this day and age) so we all know where he is coming from. so how is he going to make realistic comments on man u vs liverpool or man city vs arsenal.

think sky are taking a risk but time will tell, and i suppose he cant be any worse than andy grey.

Glad I don't have Sky Sports, can't stand that little rat faced c**t

i agree strange choice not really much of a character... they need jeff stelling doing richard keys old job all the time though he is far better than keys

as for andy gray personally think both jamie c or souness would have been better maybe even strachan ?

bit of a strange choice, seeing as how he's united through and through in a way that pisses off opposition fans especially liverpool and city ones lol

Well not like sky will lose much business seeing as how all the scousers got stolen cable

LEGEND!!!

think he will do quite well if he returns my rose tinted glasses ;)

Yeah the next Liverpool - ManU game is going to be really interesting, will rat boy suddenly pull a sickie? Can you imagine the uproar from manu fans if he started praising Liverpool, he'd get lynched
