Composure and discipline the key to Celtic's victory
By: Newsroom Staff on 03 Mar, 2011 14:25

CELTIC’S 1-0 victory over Rangers booked their place in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup as Neil Lennon’s side continue to chase trophies on three fronts.

It was a dramatic night at Celtic Park, and after the dust had settled on another victory over Rangers, Neil Lennon praised his players for their performance.

“It was a victory we thoroughly deserved and it was very pleasing to see the reaction we got from the players after last Sunday’s disappointment,” the Celtic manager said.

“We tried to play football throughout the game and, over and above that, I was delighted that, in such an atmosphere, the team remained composed and disciplined during what was, at times, a difficult game.

“There was an incident on the touchline at the final whistle between myself and Ally McCoist, and obviously it’s one that has attracted a lot of attention.

“We’ve both got a lot of experience of this fixture and know that sometimes, in the heat of the moment things can be said and words exchanged. It is a passionate game and both of us want our team to win.

“However, we were still able to sit down after the game and as far as we are concerned the matter is closed.

“But we’re pleased to be in the next round of the Scottish Cup and we’re looking forward to what I’m sure will be a tough game at Inverness.”

The victory over Rangers produced another memorable atmosphere at Paradise, with a sell-out Celtic crowd roaring the team on to victory.

And Chief Executive Peter Lawwell praised the Celtic support for the incredible backing they gave the team from first minute to last.

“It was a tremendous win for the team and the supporters responded to what was another great performance,” the Chief Executive said.

“Our fans once again provided an excellent display of how to support the team in a positive and inspiring manner. Our players, too, deserve great praise, not just for winning the match but also in the manner of the victory. They should be congratulated on their discipline.

“Stewart Regan, Chief Executive of the SFA, has issued a statement this morning and while we will clearly co-operate fully with any SFA investigation, we must take issue with elements of Stewart’s statement.

“My prime concern is Celtic and I can only comment on our Club. However, I believe that events should be put into some perspective.

“Celtic had three players booked last night. To put this in the context of other matches, St. Johnstone last night received two bookings in their match against Aberdeen, while Motherwell received five bookings against Celtic last Sunday.

“Contrary to Stewart’s statement I do not think that our players showed a lack of respect to officials.

“The team remained composed throughout what was, at times, a difficult game, and the fact that only three of our players were booked is evidence of that composure and discipline which provided the foundation for us to go and win the match. They should be congratulated in this regard.

“Neil has made a statement in terms of the incident with Ally McCoist and I believe they met after the match. While I understand that this will be part of the SFA investigation, I know that both Neil and Ally have moved on from this in the correct manner."

Scottish FA cuts Neil Lennon's ban to four games

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has had a touchline ban reduced from six matches to four following an appeal at Hampden.

Lennon had been banned for "excessive misconduct" following an altercation with fourth official Steven McLean in an away defeat by Hearts last November.

His club said they were "surprised and extremely disappointed" in January when the six-match ban was imposed.

Now, having considered Celtic's case, the Scottish FA's Appeals Board has reduced the ban term to four matches.

A statement by the SFA issued on Thursday evening said: "The Appeals Board has tonight found that the Scottish FA's charge of excessive misconduct against the Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, was inevitable.

"However, they set aside the original sanction of a two-match automatic suspension plus a further four matches for excessive misconduct and have imposed a new sanction of an automatic two-match suspension and an additional two matches.

"The new sanction will be imposed with immediate effect."

The decision means Lennon will be forced to sit in the stand when Celtic play host to Hamilton in the Scottish Premier League on Saturday, at Inverness in the Scottish Cup quarter-final on 13 March, at Celtic Park when Hibs are the SPL visitors three days later, then at Hampden for the Co-operative Insurance Cup final against Rangers on 20 March.

Celtic were represented at the Hampden hearing by Paul McBride QC.

When announcing that they planned to appeal, the club had said they felt that Lennon's punishment was "excessive and unprecedented for a first offence".

Lennon could be set to receive another ban for his part in the altercation with Rangers assistant manager Ally McCoist at Celtic Park on Wednesday night after his team's 1-0 Scottish Cup fifth-round replay win.

should have just accepted original 2 game ban IMO its costs thousands on QC's etc. although equally the 6 game ban was excesive, IMO Celtic are getting everything right just now, playing good football, signing good players, not accepting crap off the SFA but lennons antics are letting it down again IMO... although he is proving to be an exceptional manager so its not a massive cause for concern.

It is a massive cause for concern as is Rangers behaviour colin. If these guys dont get their act sorted then its gonna end up with Old firm clashes behind closed doors :( and none of us want that.
There are big faults on both sides of the divide and it needs sorting out.
No point in sighting players and managers as we all know what the problems are. For the good of the game and the good of scottish football it has to end.

im inclined to agree with a lot of that, i think a lot of it has been blown out of proportion though, smith and big mixu had a similar thing a year or 2 back? Lennon has to screw the nut but equally we are talking about a guy thats having death threats all the time, stuff painted on chapels in NI that he is going to be killed, bullets sent in the post etc.. he is obviously under a lot of external strain that walter hasnt had to deal with, who knows how anyone would cope with all of the above,

That being said though, i think he does have to accept full responsibility for his actions regardless of what mccoist said (reports suggesting McCoist offered him a fight) so what he should just laugh it off, and get on with it.

I do have a lot of respect for the way smith in the main conducts himself, and while there is a balance ive no problem with lennon having an edge but he has to control it.. I think Martin Oneil had the right mix of passion/fight/common sense lennon is still young and showing signs of being a good manager hopefully he will start to realise this and move on..

But i do agree with what you said Ian

had a few links sent to me that i wont put up for fear of being branded a troll but certain supporters websites in the blue corner were actively asking members to lie say that they seen lennon say certain things and take it to the police etc..
bottom line lennon has upset rangers fans, the referees, the sfa even the media who traditionally toe the line with rangers so its obvious why the negative stories get put out and why certain threats towards him only get picked up the odd time in the papers

feel sorry for him having all this crap going on outside football but think he has done a great job so long may it continue, as i just cant seem to get enough :)

I was at college one day and nipped up the street with my mate so he could get tickets for a celtic game, think they were playing hearts midweek?

anyway when he was in the ticket office i was watching these fellas putting in rebar under the monoblock then covering it all back in

I said to my mate "Celtic must be putting a new statue up" he replied

"Im surprised there isnt one of Jock Stein"

i wish he could predict the scores/horses aswell as that!

Cheers

i think they should put Big Mcneils up the now, i think its a great gesture by the club to honour past greats but why not let them see the statue when they are still alive to take pride in it... surely our most succesful captain deserves it.
