FORMER Israel. Liverpool and Rangers defender died today from head injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Tel Aviv last week

Cohen, who was 54, was the first Israeli to play in the English top flight when he signed with Liverpool in 1979.

He made 24 appearances, scoring one goal in the match against Aston Villa which secured the Reds the 1979-80 league title.

Cohen was one of ex-Gers boss Graeme Souness's first signings as he started his Ibrox revolution in the 1980s.

During his time at the Rangers he played in League Cup final victory over Aberdeen in 1987.

His son Tamir Cohen, who plays for Bolton, confirmed his death today.

Liverpool teammate Kenny Dalglish was among the first to pay tribute.

"Avi was a lovely man who will be remembered fondly by everyone at Liverpool who knew him," he told the Liverpool official website.

"He quickly integrated himself into the football club when he joined us and spent a lot of time learning English which really made him popular.

He was well liked by all the lads and although he didn't spend a long time at the club, he certainly left his mark and no one will forget how he helped us win the league against Aston Villa.

My thoughts and those of everyone connected to the club are with Avi's family."
