Bolton Wanderers have confirmed Gary Megson has been sacked as manager with the club in the Premier League relegation zone.

Speculation about Megson's future at the Reebok Stadium had intensified following the 2-2 draw at home to Hull City on Tuesday night.

The Trotters threw away a two-goal lead against their relegation rivals and fans called for Megson to be dismissed at the final whistle.

Megson has been unable to win over the Bolton faithful since being appointed manager in October 2007, just a few weeks after he had taken charge of Leicester City.

During his first season, he steered the club to survival and last term Bolton finished the campaign in 13th place.

However, the team have struggled for consistency this season and the stalemate with Hull left Bolton inside the bottom three due to their inferior goal difference.

With the transfer window about to open, Bolton have decided to act now and have placed Chris Evans and Steve Wigley in caretaker charge ahead of Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie against Lincoln City.
Hard work

A club statement read: "Gary Megson has been relieved of his duties as first-team manager of Bolton Wanderers Football Club with immediate effect.

"The decision has been taken in the light of the position the club finds itself in the Barclays Premier League at the halfway point of the season.

"Assistant manager Chris Evans and first-team Coach Steve Wigley will take charge of first-team matters for the interim period.

"The club wishes to place on record its thanks to Gary Megson for his hard work and commitment to Bolton Wanderers during his tenure as manager."

Megson's style of football and tactics have regularly been criticised by the supporters, who were unhappy with his decision to substitute goalscorer Ivan Klasnic against Hull.

And, speaking after what proved to be his final match at the helm, Megson acknowledged his concern that he would never be able to win over the Bolton fans.

Thank god he's gone!!!
I was willing to give him the benefit of doubt at first, but he soon proved his critics correct!!
I'm hoping for Mark Hughes but local speculation is for Paul Jewel.
Whoever we end up with must be better than Megson.

Paul Jewel would be much better choice.

I dunno how Mark Hughes would cope from going from Manchester City with unlimited funds to spend on players to Bolton who dont have much funds to spend on players. Maybe he would be ideal if he came from Blackburn Rovers

alan curbishley also in the running.... think he's a very good manager and could do well at bolton..

I was waiting to see what curly posted before commenting...:proud:

I think Megson did well to keep you lot up last year but you cannot use that as an excuse to stay forever. Megson was on borrowed time and it run out. Jewel would be a good choice (imho) but he will need time.

Owen Coyle now favourite to succed Megson according to the bookies who have him odds on. Cannot see why he would want to go to Bolton though apart from playing for them before, he has a better chance of staying in the prem with Burnley

Owen Coyle (GOD) is going no where , all this was said before about him going to celtic..
up the clarets.....

Why would Coyle turn down Celtic
He would have an Even money chance of winning trophies in Scotland and get in to Champs League
to stay at Burnley.

To the abandon Burnley for Bolton who are quite likely to get relegated?

Why would Bolton, appoint a man who has only had one season in the Prem (and a mediocre one at that) to save them from relegation.

Why would Bolton want to pay compensation when there are some unemployed managers available that they wouln#t have to pay compo to?

If I knew the answers I wouldn't be asking

Coyle may have turned down the Celtic job as he feels he has unfinished work at Burnley and wants to see what he can do there, don't forget he only young and opportunity will come his way

Bolton are after him as they want to please the fans just like Newcastle did with Keegan & then Shearer, He is an ex player who fans would like to manage the club

What unemployed managers would want to take the job and be accepted by the fans?

id rather see mark hughes there myself......

Cannot see him going from Big bucks City to relegation threatened Bolton.

Think they need to appoint somebody within the next week if they are gonna get any business done in Jan cause they need it and can see a few offers in for Cahill which Gartside may be tempted to take and then your screwed

So is his work now finished at Burnley then, if he is going to Bolton?

Wouldn't Bolton perfer to give themselves the best chance of staying in the League by appointing a man with experience?

Have you ever been unemployed? if a decent job comes along you would go for it.

Must be if he is thinking about going to Bolton, he got them to the prem and getting full crowds every game

I agree about employing somebody with a decent record in the Prem but look at how the fans reacted to Megson they wanted him out before he even had a game and Sammy Lee wasn't a good choice with the fans, they fear they are going down so want somebdoy who the fans won't heckle straight away and Coyle would be able to manage them in the Championship as he wouldn't be hounded out

Yes, I agree but taking a decent job when you already have a stable 1 in Burnley would be a risk, yes he would have more money to spend on the side but he has work in progress at Burnley

Just been on local news that Coyle has expressed his desire to leave Burnley.
Clubs are reportedly discussing compensation.

Personally I think he should do well. Fans will be right behind him which is something Megson never had.
I just hope he is as successfull here as he was at Burnley.

Compensation was agreed last night worth around £3million to Burnley which seems good business, also he had last ditch talks with Burnley last night after speaking to Bolton representatives, they have carried on today as Burnley have no training
