Hi,

I'm thinking of upgrading my heating thermostat to either a Nest or Hive, wihich ones better out the two, or are they both the same.

:fishpair:

This looks like a really good system, do you have to buy individual thermostat for the Hallway & bathrooms, or just the living areas like bedrooms and lounge area.

You can set it up lots of ways @tlogic

I have the 3 bedrooms and hall way radiators on wireless thermostats, the living room I use the main touch screen controller as a room thermostat as I have 4 radiators in there, it means we can have the bedroom heating come on 10 mins before we get up in the morning and go off as we go downstairs, bathroom we have a towel radiator so have that on all the time but I am thinking of putting a wireless thermostat on that to

If you shop around you can find reasonable package deals with a starter pack of wireless controller and 4 wireless thermostats which would be enough to get set up, if you go for it make sure you get the later model where the touch screen controller has the WiFi built in otherwise you have to have a wireless bridge, just another box to hide ;)

It does seem to save on a lot of energy but not sure if the saving on energy will ever pay for the initial layout for the system itself but for me the convenience of it all is worth it

Plus one for Honeywell Evohome. We have a two bed bungalow (it's not just for big houses)and have had it installed now for a year and a half. I love that you can schedule each room independently. It also works with IFTTT and Amazon Echo.

@Bronto I'm seriously considering the evo system but have a few questions for anyone in the know. I want to control 7 rads but one of them is a bypass on the combi system. can I put the bypass from its existing rad to the rad in the small downstairs loo or am I best leaving it in the hall were it currently is and I assume the existing CH system wall thermostat/timer is disconnected? Probably looking circa £600 on the Honeywell site but I assume that's everthing required ie controller rad valves and whatever it takes to connect to the network or am I missing anything out.
cheers

Looking on plumbarena website I can get the stuff £116 cheaper than Honeywell site. I.E controller pack and 6 rad valves for £487 inc vat
Checkout

Same kit from Honeywell is £603

@IANB correct the old thermostat is no longer needed

As I said earlier make sure you get the latest controller with WiFi built in to connect to boiler (model - >ATP921R3100) > Honeywell evohome WiFi Connected Thermostat Pack | Smart Heating Controls

also make sure you get UK valves (model - HR924UK) > Honeywell evohome Radiator Multi Zone Kit | Smart Heating Controls

A lot of the cheaper kits on some sites have the old controller and EU valves which are upside down when fitted

This is the kit you Don't want > EH THR992GRT: Evohome smart gateway starter pack at reichelt elektronik

@Bronto

Cheers mate that checks out same nos as the kit I'm looking at. Here Checkout

Update just ordered it so hopefully have it installed next weekend

We have hive and it has completely taken over our boiler. It used to be lovely and warm beforehand just at the flick of a switch and a turn of a valve. Now we are constantly turning it up because hive doesn't kick in when the room cools down quick enough.. It's a good idea paired with your phone but the initial running of it is a bit naff.

I've got the original Hive and given the choice I would go for the Nest. It just looks so cool

I have Nest, and the nice thing about it is the IOS & Web application. A lot of the "smart" devices I have gotten the apps for have been terrible, like the Insteon lights or Lutron shades. However, the Nest people actually know how to build the end applications. I'm not sure if Hive has invested as much.

I'm looking to get a smart thermostat I'm my house. It's between the nest and the Honeywell. I've got a combi boiler so might get the nest second Gen to keep costs down

Honeywell system is top notch mate I have been running it for 3 months now and cant fault it. It is easly self installed and only takes a couple of hours max :) Check the links in my posts above for good next day supplier and a lot cheaper than Honeywell direct

Cool Ian I'll have a look , I do like the look of the Honeywell stat

The NEST has more multi-platform integration with over devices like a harmony remote, URC, insteon, etc.
