Hi, Amazon Echo is now available for pre-order. £99 special price for Prime members.
Anyone getting one? Or anyone imported one and recommend it?

Don't see any need for it. Same as the Apple Watch really. Pointless tech for gadget freaks.

Guess you could get it to message the wife "Make me tea"

£99.99 to be able to shout at agadget to see what the weather is so I don't have to turn my chair to look out the window. Seems fair to me.

I know it does more than that, the brother-in-law has had one for ages, he lives in the US. He walks past the light switch so he can shout "Alexa turn on the lights" which to me sums up Americans anyway.

Amazon's Echo speakers head to UK and Germany

Amazon has confirmed its virtual assistant Echo speakers are coming to the UK, Germany and Austria.

Until now, the company sold its voice-controlled devices only in the US.

The machines can answer questions, control other internet-connected devices, build shopping lists and link in to dozens of third-party services including Spotify, Uber and BBC News.

Experts say they appeal to early adopters' sense of curiosity but tend to be a harder sell to others.

"[Echo's] been relatively successful in the US because it is so easy to use," said Jessica Ekholm from the Gartner consultancy.

"But for many the question remains: why would they want a smart home?"

Privacy campaigners have also raised concerns about the use of such listening technology.

I'm keen to get Nest or Hive thermostat at some point. I think its a nice feature even if you dont have the Echo.

So the full Amazon echo is £149 and the Amazon Echo Dot is £49.99 and the only real difference I can see is the dot doesnt have the speakers.

But for the extra £100 you could get a pretty good stereo (the original echo is mono) set of blutooth speakers which the dot can use, or save the money and plug the dot into your hifi system, which is the only thing I would ever listen to music on.

I thought this might be good for a daily schedule as it links to Google calendar
Will speak all my days work while I'm getting ready
anyone got one yet ? It does have some great reviews

I went ahead and got one. Getting ready for work use it for news summary and weather and also for travel news for commute to work. Music is good as well. Not got any smart devices to connect to it yet.

Have you tried linking it to Google calendar @gadgethome ?

did you get the Echo or Echo Dot ?

Im swaying towards the Dot myself due to not really needing the bigger speaker as I have Samsung speakers for home entertainment

Yes I have my linked to my google calendar. It reads out my appointments and you can also create event. If would be nice if it read out your appointments in advance but thats not supported.

I went for the echo as I wanted the speaker part as well. If you already have a system, then as you say, the dot would be better option.

Just to be sure it is only the speaker thet you are paying extra for, all other features are the same ?

I did do a fair bit of reading last night and from what I read it is only the speaker but I could of missed something :)

Im a little confused. so have these sold out or are they not released yet ? as they are showing
Dot
