Hi all,
I hope some one can answer a question regarding splitting a satellite feed
Quite simply my full set up is a sky multiroom with two satellite dishes feeding three sky boxes, two of which are multiroom systems, i have decided to add a skybox F5 into the house to see how this system operates and how reliable it is before i decide which way to proceed.

At present I have split one of the satellite feeds from the LMB on the dish before it enters the rear of an original sky system a proper splitter has been used so I have a direct feed from the dish split into two outlets, one outlet goes directly back into the rear of the original sky system and the second outlet goes to the rear of my F5 skybox, my problem is, when either system is powered on the other dosnt work, im assuming that the split signal isnt strong enough, therefore again im assuming that i need to boost my signal before it is split, can i use a standard signal booster, or do i need to purchase a satellite signal booster?

any help or advice on how to proceed would be appreciated
kind regards

You cannot spilt a satellite signal m8,you need a separate feed for every box :)

Thanks for the very prompt reply, not that I doubt your reply but could you explain why? as a dumb ass, I thougt that a signal was a signal, so that this would be the same as splitting a signal from a standard aerial, if that can be split before it hits two tv's why cant a signal be split from a dish before it hits two seperate receivers ?

can you advise ?
kind regards

To be completely honest I cant explain it lol
I think its to do with the horizontal and vertical polarizations that satellite channels are on :)

wiz569 is correct....i have the openbox X5 it has a loop through connector next to LNB input, i can tell you it doesn't work ive tried

An LNB picks up 4 signals but only 1 at a time. High/Low/Vertical/Horizaontal. Which one it picks up are are defined by the receiver, as such you cannot have two receivers controlling it. If you loop out, first receiver must be in standby, otherwise you can only use teh same quadrant on the second receiver.

A quad lnb is four separate lnbs together, octo is eight separarte lnbs.

Excellent reply, having no knowledge of the subject I now understand it isnt a seperate signal and that each box is trying to control the lmb, thus the signal cant be used by two boxes at the same time, this now allows me to progress further.
thank you all for your very detailed help, although technically beyond my understanding, I understand the content of the replys and therefore there meaning

thank you all so very much for taking the time to reply
kind regards

You can disconnect one of the feeds on the Sky+ and set it to Single feed mode. Connect it to the other receiver and it will work.
Downside is that you cannot watch one and record another on the Sky+

the feed into the sky box which i split was a dual cable entering the box, my understanding was that it was not important which of the two cables i selected so i split one of these putting one (split) back into the box and the second (split) to my new f5
can you advise how I select single feed mode and if i proceed with this, will there be any difference in how things are working at present
both boxes work ( one at at time ) however i must admit i havnt checked the recording function on my sky box, i do understand for the recoding function to work both cables must be connected to the sky box
thanks again

should of worked if you didnt actually split the cable ... and just put on end into sky box as its a seperate lnb cable

Thanks for the reply, but if you had actually read the first post, and all of the subsiquent replys advising why this cant be done, you may have realised the actual question posted has already been answered, and your post is not really relevant to the question asked, if i had have had the facility to run a feed directly from an lmb i would have dont that, and my first post would not have been necessary, however that was and is not an option, and others have advised why, (question asked actually answered by a few members) that the skybox (f5) and the original sky receiver fight for control of the shared lmb, and that splitting a feed should not be done, I would also like to point out to all who read this thread of the risk in attempting this, READ THE THREAD there is a fire risk that i was not aware of, on a second note, and this applys to all, if i were to ask you to pick either a green or red ball, i wouldnt expect you to say "yes its going to rain today" my point, when posting a reply to a question, and ive noticed other members comments on this, PLEASE do not hi-jack a thread and make sure your comments are relevant to the question asked, it makes much more sence and is far more helpfull to members who are looking for help to actual problems
