Up to 90,000 Sky+ HD boxes are to be replaced after a manufacturing fault was identified in a batch of units manufactured by Pace, it has been confirmed.

The problem first came to light on Wednesday, when some Sky customers reported being called by the pay TV operator and advised of a fault that could impact the long term performance of their Sky+ HD box.

Sky's high definition team posted : "Pace has told us about a manufacturing fault that can affect around 90,000 of the first boxes supplied by Pace. The fault was resolved in Pace’s subsequent supplies of boxes.

"To be 100% clear, it’s nothing to with a faulty component; the problem relates to the way that some of the boxes were assembled. It doesn’t raise a safety risk or prevent them from being used as normal until we exchange them, but in the longer term it could lead to the failure of the box.

"We’re proud of our Sky+HD product and we’re not happy about customers having boxes that don’t meet our quality standards. So we want to swap all of the boxes in this batch.

"We started calling the affected customers earlier this week to fix an appointment for one of our engineers to come and install a free replacement box. Because of the number of boxes, it will take us about three months to contact everyone, so there is no need to be concerned if we haven’t called you already. The box can continue to be used as normal until we come to replace it.

"To make up for any inconvenience, we will give all affected customers three months’ free subscription to our HD pack (worth £29.25) when we replace their box."

Further details about the precise nature of the fault have not been released.

absolute, total and utter bullsh1t

the 'fault' is that the receivers have component outputs as well as HDMI, and the component outputs are not HDCP copy protected, nor are they makrovision protected

its a perfect HD output that can be copied straight to DVD

ive repaired 6 of these exact units today, as theyre now worth a lot more money to those who know about this 'fault'

ive attached a picture of the 2 types of boxes, the old one with the 'fault' and the new one on top of it

When I read this article in the paper this morning I knew there was more to it than meets the eye.
Skys attitude would normally be "replace them as they break" and charge you for the privilege lolol.

Cheers for the info digidude.

yeah if they were that worried about faulty boxes they would of replaced the hundreds of thousands of cheaply made and die within a year sky+ boxes.

the actual fault with the pace boxes is that they are unable to disable the component outputs with a firmware update, the other models they can

The only reason that componant was in the original spec was sly had a bunch on godawfull rebadged plasma panels under the sly brand that were sold as HD ready but actually were only "hd compatible" but only through the componant input. once they realised this they very quickly ditched the television range and this is the last cleanup operation. The bad publicity from the plasmas would have been too much to bear so this is what they did!

when they phone tell them that you know what they are up to and will sell it back to them for £500 and not a penny less!

Im thinking of getting rid or vermin and getting full package with sky hd ,notice the sata port on back can you add onther hard drive via sata port

Is the bottom one a Pace Digi.

I thought only the thompsons had Component.

Two pictures here:

A Thomson box, WITH component connections. Look familiar?

A Pace SkyHD box ,no component connections...

Are you sure about your diagnosis digidude m8?
