It always seem to be in the news down this way, saying about safer cycle lanes, cycle only roads and then of course about cyclist deaths caused by lorries or buses (my opinion, but I don't always agree that lorries or buses are the cause, but more likely the cyclist the cause).
Anyhow, they appear to be spending big bucks on cyclists and their safety. How about if they utilised some of the old abandoned Underground Systems that are just laying dormant, it could eradicate cyclist deaths caused by the lorries and buses, because there will not be any down there ! and of course the cyclist will not have to cope with any of the other problems they encounter such as car doors opening in front of them, no need for them to ignore traffic lights and so also lessening the strain on motorists who have to be extra vigilant about cyclists.
Work on these tunnels would not disrupt traffic on the roads and free up some extra space on the roads where the cycle lanes had been, and the cost of working on the tunnels would probably be less than working on the roads above.

It would not work, due to the fact there would be no pavements for them to cycle on and red lights to jump.

Not such a bad idea after all

Bike paths in abandoned tube tunnels: is the London Underline serious?

I'm not sure what there is in terms of abandoned underground systems in London but I like the idea.

In terms of the "London Underline" using abandoned tube tunnels, I don't know of any except for the short line from St. Pauls to Aldwych. The route they "compare" with is the Greenwich foot tunnel, so not even being able to use a genuine example to compare with or mentioning any genuine possibilities shows the problem.

Even if it could be done, I question whether it would be used (although it's possible people would) and how much it would cost to maintain etc.
Building one for cyclists is extremely unlikely to happen due to the initial costs alone, then obviously maintenance and continuing costs etc.

My short response initially however is: Try finding one to use! ;)

ROBsLab .

Can I just say I fookin hate cyclists, the should be banned from ALL roadways and they should be made to take a proficiency test and should have insurance, so does my mate Brian, here is one of his latest videos.

I've known him for 25 years, a quiet more pleasant man you could ever wish to meet, he was fined £360 and given 9 penalty points, he's 69 years old and will never drive a cab again.

There's been an explosion of cyclists in Edinburgh in the last 5 years and and far too many fatalities, and the amount of arguments and fights I've seen
is incredible, the government and local authority's have to take their share of the blame for these incidents, they constantly narrow roads and closing others just has the cyclist and the motorist fighting for a single lane, I now have a forward facing camera in the cab just for the day when a cyclist pulls out in front of me, because it's not a case of IF but WHEN.

True I'm afraid. There are good conscientious cyclists out there. I know one well and he gets really pissed off by the raving numpties in the cycling fraternity.

Going by what I've experienced in the last few days, it seems that the average cyclist nowadays has the level of road awareness you see in Russian car crash videos.

It's time we had compulsory proficiency tests and compulsory insurance for cyclists.
