my daughter is off to university, this sept.

I'm looking to get there a lappy and would like the advice of members.
price of £600

I'm thinking we need.
1, Core i5 or equivalent.
2, 8gb memory
3, 1 TB hdd (not interested i SSD's)
4, 15 or so inch screen.

anyone got any recommendation's?

That looks like a pretty good requirements list you have there especailly if using for word processing and surfing. I would add a long battery life of at least 5 hours for that price. I usually use ebuyer.com and once sorted by price use the ratings as a useful guide. I have a preference for Lenovo but I think all the top brands are pretty much alike for reliability.

That looks really good oneman. Can't go wrong with that spec and a two year warranty. I'm interested myself.

Blimey mate! Hopefully if she's got to Uni she's better at typing than you ;) Only kidding.

Shouldn't really stereotype, but as a lady she probably won't use it for more of the intensive uses such as proper gaming, so for your budget, you should have a good range available. I'd consider 4GB if it comes down to price and you can get the better processor.

Your budget is too high. It will get used for Internet including email, Facebook etc and some typing up. I'd pitch at £300 and go for summat like this - Toshiba Satellite C850-1MC Laptop - Laptops | Ebuyer.com

Consider the three year warranty - the silly fookers always drop them ;)

Then add in a decent sized USB key for backup.

That's based on fixing a fair few student lappys :)

ok thanks (and for Vector2 thaks)

the reason for the 8gm is she will be doing quite intensive graphics, and spreadsheets. she will also use it for watchin TV, via internet freeview, as their are no Ariel TV connections in here halls.
she has here phone for Facepuke and the like.

so what would be a descent graphics upgrade, over standard?

oh, and we have usb sticks around here from 8-32 gb, so she will not be short of storage.

What sort of graphics ? Like presentations or something else ? Which software package will she be using ?

graphic design, and animations.
she currently uses CS6 suite.

but the upgrade was "just to have it", as it seems we can get the lappy for less than i expected.
and this will have to last here 4-5 years before she can afford another.

I'm off to see a sammy 15.3 with windows 8, 6gb ram, 1tb hdd with 1gb shared memory, which is £570 inc 3 year extended cover. aint found out what the graphics card is yet though

So we went for an Asus K56ca, core5i with 6gb (1gb shred graphics), 1tb hdd.
@£550 inc MS office and three year cover.

My daughter fell for it when we were looking, and i couldn't find a good reason not to get it.
