What I would do is load up something like speedtest.net in a separate window so its ready, then do a speed test as soon as the problem begins to manifest itself. Should tell you straight away what the problem is. You could also try opening a comman prompt and doing a "tracert" to the address...

CDex is what I've always used. Takes a couple of minutes to configure but after that its dead easy.

Daemon Tools for mounting images ImgBurn for burning images. Alcohol is good but you have to crack it, and it sometimes uncracks itself for no reason.

You could use Nero Vision, or DVD Shrink, though that is no longer made and may fail on some more modern DVD's. Or you could buy some dual layer discs, but you'll still have to strip the encryption. Also try DVD Decrypter.

Boot the XP disc again, go for a new install, then delete the partitions from within setup and create a new one. Don't try and install over the top of an existing install or it will get so far and then attempt to load your previous config of the hard disk and fail again.

Get your Windows disc (or download one) and boot from it, then run a repair. You won't lose any data, just may have to reinstall some apps.
