A 10-year-old girl has been hospitalised after she was bitten by a dog in Kilmarnock.

Toni Clannachan, 10, was bitten in the face by a Japanese Akita dog while she was playing in a schoolfriend's garden at a house on Tuesday.

Her father, James Dixon, told the Daily Record newspaper: "These dogs shouldn't be with families or around kids. They are killing machines."

The newspaper also said the attack left Toni needing more than 100 stitches.

Speaking about the attack, Mr Dixon said: "If the dog had bit her an inch or so lower it would have severed an artery in her neck and I really think she would be dead."

A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said last night: "At 4.40pm on August 31 a 10-year-old female sustained facial injuries when she was bitten by a Japanese akita dog in the Kilmarnock area."

The girl was taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where she was said to be in a stable condition.

This is the second attack on a child in Scotland by dogs this week, after 10-year-old Rhianna Kidd was attacked while riding her bike in a Dundee street on Sunday.

She underwent emergency surgery and was treated for a fractured jaw and had plastic surgery. The dogs were later destroyed.

Tayside Police said a 33-year-old woman had been charged under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 for failing to keep the animals under control.

like anything a dog brought up well is a good dog, but they are also like people, no matter what you dosometimes they are just bad, and all dogs are essentially wild animals. DOnt get me wrong, i am a dog owner (staffy) so i know , but these akitas are big dogs and not one ive seen round here doesnt have a muzzle on.

hope shes alright.

i hope the girl makes good progress..but what is going to happen to the owners as its there responsibility to make sue the dogs behave in the right manner..i have 2 staff,s and if anything happened i would take full responsibility as i know my dogs wouldn't do anything but if they did it would be my fault ..not the dogs

i don't know much about that breed, they sound ok on wikipedia, doesn't say anything about them being a dangerous breed of dog?

Akita Inu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

any dog that shows aggression eva should be dangerous but its just a pity that its just the big/muscle dogs that get blamed for it .at the end of the day its the owners fault they are responsible for the dogs and the dogs should be in a suitable safe environment if the owners cant control the dogs they shouldn't have them simple as that.. dogs should be treated as family not for a image to see how hard you are (or mostly how stupid you look) bad dogs have VERY BAD OWNERS

no mate, i havent, not round here, from your reply i`m guessing you have a big dog? i`m not advocating staffys, nor am i saying all big dogs are vicious, i`m simply saying all the akitas round here have muzzles on, just like a couple of staffys do, and whatever other dogs do. Nearly every akita ive seen has been straining at the lead for other dogs, i`m only saying its an observation. And yeah, jack russels are one of the most vicious dogs known to man. ive had a few, we used to breed them years back.

at the end of the day mate, yes, bring a dog up badly and it will more than likely be a bad dog. but lets face it, no matter what you do, sometimes you just get phsyco dogs no matter how well they are brought up, its the same with people, you cant blame it all on the owner / parent, some are just fooked.

everywhere i go with my dog i get people pulling away from my pitbull (thats what people say, most have never seen a pitbull)

we had a border collie, wouldnt hurt a fly, but the neighbours a few doors away had one too, and their dog bit our son for no reason at all, she always looked very highly strung and nervy i thought.

have to agree that some dogs are just nuts, we had a terrier when i was a kid that was mental, you couldnt do anything with him. and i have had friends with german sheperds and doberman/rottweilers that were lovely docile dogs.

what i meant by my earlier post is that some breeds seem to have a bad name, pitbulls, rottweilers etc, but i hadn't personally heard anything about this breed.

i know what your saying mate..looks can be deceiving..

Normally the smaller the dog, the more vicious they are lol, weve had yorkshire terriers that where absolute killers lol, and i`d never own a chihuaoua (feck the spellin lol) they are just too snappy :D

father in laws got an akita cross looks like its crossed with a lassis style collie, things off its head (not vicous as such, it just like sucking on your hand lol), i dont know about muzzles, half of em need saddles ;)

a few month back at blackpool seen two massive neopolitan mastifs , came over sniffing my dog, shes all sheepish etc etc, then one sniffs her fanny lol thats it, two big neopolitan mastifss running off down the beech wi my dog chasing em , quality, even the owner where laughing, these must of been 10 stone each quality dogs though.

Unfortunately its only the maulings that make the news headlines! Something has to be done about stray or disowned dogs! 250,000 people are bitten in the UK each year!

Listed below is some of the foul bacteria that lives in a dogs mouth so even if the bite isn't life threatning, if it breaks the skin then you'll need treatment!

•Staphylococcus spp.
•Streptococcus spp.
•Eikenella spp.
•Pasteurella spp.
•Proteus spp.
•Klebsiella spp.
•Haemophilus spp.
•Enterobacter spp.
•Capnocytophaga canimorsus (formerly known as DF-2)
•Bacteroides spp.

IMHO, If a dog is out without its owner but is wearing a tag then it should be taken home and the owner issued with a hefty fine, and I mean thousands of pounds £5K minimum!

If a dog is without its owner (assuming it has one) and not wearing a tag, then it should be lifted and sold on to a screened owner! What I mean by screened is that an RSPCA officer visits the potential owner at home to make sure they can accomodate a dog. However should the dog be reluctant to be handled, then it should be destroyed!

That might sound cruel and might not be entirely the dogs fault, but where to you draw the line? We lock up people that have been damaged mentally so why not dogs?
