I am in 2 minds in buying a satnav.Could anyone tell me which one is best a Garmin or a tomtom? Thanks.

depends what you want it for, garmin seem reliable (i have the i3)and prob not as fancy as tom tom, garmin is cheaper but tomtom is easier to get updates (although i use a converter so no probs)both get you there but tom tom may do more than that ie music, updates on traffic(at a cost) etc. do you want it for work or just in the family car.

i got a garmin 510 well happy with it

i've used both and currently use TomTom - definately the better of the 2

tomtom seems to be more well known but garmin have some really nice stuff on the market. best bet is to go into a shop and have a play round with some of them to see which you like best

i'd go for the tomtom as you can update the maps easily whereas garmin requires a code at about $75

Go for a TomTom easy to update and add POIs.

i just updated my maps for £25 which gave me coverage of most of europe as well, its better than garmin updates which just give you uk and ireland.

why???

if that is so why can u get the irish map?

tom tom use tele atlas software and they fell out with the ROI mapping company and only major roads (motorways) are listed go off those routes at its fecked !!!

garmin however use navteq software and it has 99% coverage of the ROI

Tomtom has got a pretty good map coverage - most of Europe, USA, Canada & Australia.

its all up to peoples choice i have a tom tom but they r more exspensive than all other brands of sat nat , but all camera`s , poi`s and voices can be changed and updated , and for reliablility i would go for a tom tom defo

I have tom tom, and is perfect for mainland Europe, but in Ireland there are no more than main roads (M50, N3, etc) but nothing else, so you would be driving across waste land 90% of the time.
For Ireland I use Navigator, is perfect. It even has an option to swap between car and pedestrian, and search of POIs close to you (More than the ones I was able to find in tom tom in spain, for example), so when you park your car, you can still use it.
