I am normally a very patient person, and help others out but not now when it comes to family and friends and satellite boxes I give up

Getting called any time of day when boxes has a problem, what do they expect me to do .. I do have a life . one of my uncles every little problem, on the phone, now I don't bother answering, he did get a bit pissed off yesterday when I finally answered after his 10th call in a space of 10 minutes

anyway rant over .. no more on call support for family and friends

Same problem here when I used to build computers for friends and family.

You live and learn. :shakeshead:

Lol, i gave up family & friends a good while back after learning the hard way. They expect to pay peanuts and get the same service you'd get from Sky etc and most of em wouldn't do fcuk all for you. I now only help out a selected few who know the rules of the game.

I used to run a small cs server, 12 clients. Occasionally my router would need a reboot.
One of my mates asked what would happen if a reboot was required whilst I was abroad on holiday. I replied that obviously I would arrange to catch the next flight home :bangshead:

I stopped very soon after that, mates and family are the worst. They never see the big picture.
They bring me items for repair which have little value and expect to pay next to nothing. Would they work on my car, garden or house for a couple or 3 hours for £5-£10?, would they fook. I'm a skilled technician and work for nobody without proper recompense.
Mates and family get it cheaper but I am not working for minimum pay. If my parents were still alive there would be no charge.

Yep, been there mate.
Re. re-booting remotely (should the need ever arise again) I did a job a good few years ago for a government agency (nothing sinister!) where various outstations had to be polled on a daily basis. Some of them were quite remote and a site visit to re-boot a modem could be quite costly. So I put one of those cheap 24 hour mechanical timers in to cut the power every day about 1/2 hour after the normal time for polling. That way we could try again after the reboot and if it failed again after the second attempt a site visit was arranged. Another more modern way would be to use a GSM operated switch.
And don't some fancier routers have a watchdog function? I'm sure that could be written into a DD-WRT device...

Re. family and "friends" I moved away from most of them lol!! I'd help anyone out if I could, but a few expected rather a lot for f*** all in return. You eventually learn which ones are taking you for a mug.

I have found that if you do any work for family and friends they then assume a lifetime guarantee.
I used to be a washing machine engineer.
When asked I now answer
I don't have specialist tools or any spare parts, but here is the number of a guy that does.
