Why do we name tropical storms and hurricanes?

Until the early 1950s, tropical storms and hurricanes were tracked by year and the order in which they occurred during that year. Over time, it was learned that the use of short, easily remembered names in written as well as spoken communications is quicker and reduces confusion...........................................................................................

Cant they just say October16?

I can understand given it a name on John Cravens children's news round to take the edge of it's seriousness, but for adults i think the month and year would be more appropriate. Lol

August 23, 2005 means nothing to me. Hurricane Katrina however brings back televised memories of New Orleans, etc;
Honestly can't believe that was 11 years ago!!

I was thinking along the same lines.

Hurricane bawbag sticks in my mind, can't believe that was 5 years ago...
