You used to be able to transfer it with the vehicle and agree a price with the buyer. This came in with the changes around requirement to display.

Yes mate it's always been you could only get a full month back, not part there of but now the DVLA get the money twice on part months because you have to sell the vehicle with no tax, so even if you sold it 1 day into the new month the new owner would have to tax it from the 1st and DVLA don't have to give the old owner that month back

Yep try a transfer if its worth the hassle..there again why should they get your money for nothing

my daughter and son inlaw are on the othere side of it just had a check for 85 quid from dvla thay thought it got sold with the car so thay are quite happy

my old car was SORN'd over xmas, i taxed it on the 28th jan, and had to pay the whole month, as well as feb tax, all in one payment. on the 26th feb i got a new car, and had to also pay a full month for that car for feb and march in one payment, and it was too late to cancel the payment for the tax for march on the other car, and they wouldnt process the paperwork in time, so i paid 5 months road tax for a 4 week period because i un-SORN'd and changed cars in a short space of time

the new 'better' system sucks a$$, and 'theres nothing they can do about it'

I bought a new car that was zero tax rated but had to get a receipt from post office saying it had been taxed as the national data base can take up to 8 days get updated. Will be the same for paid tax so make sure you keep your receipt or your car could be impounded if you get an arsey cop. Even though you are zero tax its technically not exempt as you still have to tax it it just costs you nothing ;)
