I would wait until the manufacturer comes up with something better than the FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) interconnect and the UP FPC connector in particular.

Looking aroung the 'net I see people are installing these without the FPC and wiring directly, this would be a better solution.

I have one in progress at the moment, it won't work when assembled due to pressure on the UP connector causing bad contact, I've had it to pieces countless times, I even remember where the four or five different types of screw go!

If I can't get the connector stable by gluing which may be risky I'm going to wire it directly using the FPC pads as points to solder to after cutting it.

In case you were wondering what the wiring is like here's some pictures:

I've put some Araldite on the FPC to hold it to the UP board where it enters the connector and on the FPC and connector clasp. Araldite is maybe a better choice than cyanoacrylate for these flexible boards.

I'll take some pictures of where I mean and post them tomorrow if it works after stuffing it back into its case.

Might be an idea to fold the FPC to reduce stress on the connector if possible also.

The glue didn't help much; very temperamental when put back together.

Next...

Wiring the UP board without the demon connector which was banished with a blast of the WHA 300 :).

The connector pads look good to solder to.

it allows you to load any firmware onto it. so if you brick your psp u chip it and run the firmware from there letting you repair the onboard firmware. kindda like chipping xbox and running fireware that way

lol if spectre having problems what chance have the rest of us got.. feck it

ill wait til summat ALOT simpler and better comes along

cheers for your insight spectre

lol true think its a wise move :)

When I get some suitable enamelled wire I'll try it and see; should be OK as I traced the solder points to pins on the connector.

I'll make a diagram in case anyone wants to try it, I know there are some alternate wiring diagrams about the net but I'd like to keep it in-house :).

where can u buy the Undiluted Platinum i have a psp thats bricked and this seems to unbrick them.

thanks

Just have a Google for it.

I haven't had time to complete my installation yet but note that it's not the easiest of soldering tasks!

I have done one of these, It worked. But I`ll NEVER install one again. :FRIGHT:
They are so difficult to install if you don`t have good magnification

For an idea of soldering standard required...

This is my FPC bypass point to point wiring MKII :).

So the saga comes to a close with a working UP installation.

The connector pinout is to follow when I draw it up but here are some pictures of how I installed it.

I glued the wires to the UP board after this picture.

I modified the USB socket to fit it permanently, the picture is a bit blurred but I cut a channel in the right pad board support to accommodate the USB wires and cut some holes in the brown tape visible. I trimmed the legs of the battery cover button so they wouldn't hit the connector when it was installed.

The USB socket board was modified as shown and the connector pins were straightened and soldered to directly.

And... If there is any dust or fingerprints on the screen they are staying there!

Nice to get the thing working though, I won't be beaten by some fiddly soldering :).

Here's the mod to the USB socket PCB.

Need to remove the metal plate at the back of the connector and file the rest down a bit to make it fit.

Note the resistors.

Here's the pad layout :).
