World Series of Poker 2008: Battle For The Bracelets

51PJOZPtmbL._AA280_.jpg

Activision has quickly become the company to beat with its World Series of Poker franchise. In a few short years, it's gone from a lackluster title to a game that almost encapsulated the gambling experience perfectly. Building on the strengths of last year's title, Activision and Left Field Productions have recently released World Series of Poker 2008: Battle For the Bracelets. Thanks to a slicker presentation, larger sense of WSOP Tournaments and some additional features, Activision has once again produced one of the best poker games on the market.

The main career mode has a different twist on this year's play. As the fresh face on the WSOP block, players are no longer being taken underneath the wing of Chris "Jesus" Ferguson like they were in last year's game. Instead, you join the tour along one of three difficulty levels: amateur, semi-professional or professionally ranked player, which determines the number of events that you can enter and your starting bankroll. Of course, the object of the career mode is to expand your starting stack with prize money that you win in tournaments, but the other end of it is to gain additional Player of the Year points by performing well in tournaments to end your season with the overall Player of the Year award. Considering that means that you'll need to knock off Phil "The Poker Brat" Hellmuth, that could be a tall order for some beginners, but it's an interesting challenge to extend to people.

Become the poker shark you always wanted to be.
Once again, like last year, the progression from tournament to tournament feels a bit throttled back since you're dealing with events on the calendar as they come up. On open days, or those moments when you end your tournament run a bit early, you'll sometimes receive phone calls from fellow gamblers inviting you to cash only events at different hotels. This will give you another chance to increase your bank roll and points totals with a much further reduced number of opponents. As you play, you'll earn different awards, such as collector chips for earning different hands or defeating tour pros, which you can wager online against opponents or rivals. Rivals in WSOP 2008 are online players that have defeated you in infrastructure games or showdowns, affecting your overall standings on the online leaderboards.

While the inclusion of rivals in online play provides an additional competitive nature to the game, you won't particularly find the same thing extended to you in the single player experience. Defeating someone like Annie Duke or Mike Matusow over a series of tournaments isn't going to make them antagonistic towards you, or talk extra smack to you whenever you get to the table. Since some of the "entertainment" of watching WSOP is to witness the wilder personalities clashing over the tables, you'd think that having a poker rival or two over the course of your career would be a natural fit for the game, but it's not to be. That isn't to say that the computerized versions of the tour professionals won't give you a challenge at all; for the most part, they'll intelligently play their hands, making effective bluffs or wisely getting themselves out of losing hands without giving up a ton of money. However, you'll still run into a couple of situations where pros and random players will try to make runs with a pair of twos or a junk pocket hand, keeping their fingers crossed for a card that just isn't going to come.

WSOP 2008 features many variations of poker, including Omaha, Razz, Seven Card Stud and of course, Texas Hold 'Em, as well as extensive tutorials and tutorial options for beginners. Players can also play No Limit Hold 'Em against specific pros, create their own custom games and tournaments, or enter a speed game with continually increasing blinds and limits, as well as a clock that limits the amount of time you have to weigh decisions at the table. It also features video poker and blackjack, which is an interesting diversion, but feel like an afterthought compared to the other game modes. As you play more hands, you'll unlock tools that can be used through every round of poker. For the most part, novices will probably rely upon the pot odds tool, which continually gives you an update on how weak or strong your hand is across your initial deal, as well as the flop, turn and river. However, some of them aren't nearly as useful as they could be. While the opponent's tool gives percentages of raises or folds on a hand, I'd rather have a sense of a particular tour member's playing style because that usually dictates whether or not they're following typical behavior for that person.

Think you can beat my hand, old man?
A lot of extra attention has obviously been placed on the presentation of WSOP 2008, sharpening up the menus and the look of action at the tables with the screen split into three areas: one that focuses on the table, one with a close up on the player and another one at the bottom of the screen that has an extreme close up on the cards in play. While this doesn't particularly help you as far as tells or getting a sense of what your opponents have in their hand, it gives an additional television styled presentation to the action at the tables. This is evident with the large amount of video that's scattered throughout the title, including the introductions of tournaments at Las Vegas casinos and poker tutorials. This re-tooled presentation also makes it easier to determine information like how many players are still in your particular tournament, or who the chip leaders are.

However, even with the increase in attention to making the game seem slicker, the game still has a number of issues with long pauses between command inputs and onscreen character responses, as well as incorrect chip count animations during bets. This is exacerbated on the PSP, where the wait between the input of your command and the character response takes much longer and even suffers from slowdown. It should've been fixed from last year's title, and is a nagging hold over that hampers the feel of the game. It also winds up exacerbating some of the other visual problems that stand out with character models. The PSP does a somewhat decent job of handling some of the seaming and pixilation, but there's a distinct lack of customizable options, obviously restrained by the UMD limitations. The same can be said of some of the videos, which are obviously left out because of the space limitations for the disc. Text on menus can also be hard to read on the screens, which appear to be pulled direct from the console versions of the game and shrunk down to fit the PSP screen. Hopefully these issues will be smoothed out in future titles.

Closing Comments
Almost as good as pocket aces, World Series of Poker 2008: Battle For the Bracelets further strengthens Activision's claim to the best poker franchise around, although it does have some blemishes on the PSP. Computer AI is still as solid this year around, and the inclusion of Player of the Year points for the career mode and redone presentation, coupled with online rivals makes this game one of the best poker games out there. As long as you can look past the slowdown that crops up and the UMD limitations, this is an amusing title. If you're looking to polish up your skills before you hit Vegas, or want an engaging card game, you'll want to check this one out.

Beats

GameSnapshot_BEATS_1195597636.jpg

US, November 20, 2007 - With the launch of the PlayStation Store for PC (which allows gamers to grab content for home use and for PlayStation Portable), Sony let loose a few surprises that portable gamers might want to check out. In addition to full-fledged games (Wipeout Pure and Gangs of London are both downloadable directly to Memory Stick at reduced prices) and mini-modes (a portion of the multiplayer mode in Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow is downloadable for those who didn't pick up the full game), there are also trailers for movies and games. And hidden in that trailer section is a brand new game for the PSP titled simply "Beats."

For music fans, Beats looks to be a dream come true. A game almost entirely based on playback of your personal music collection (the trailer shows some pre-loaded tracks of old PS1 games by SCE Europe, but it's unknown if these songs will be included), Beats takes any song and turns it into gameplay. Using beat tracking technology, the game creates button-press combo sequences that follow the play standard of games like DDR and DJ Max Portable. The trailer hints at there being a few different types of games to play in Beats (the official site list "Challenge" and "Jamming" modes), and there will be downloadable content as the game evolves. Also planned are a wide range of customizations you can make to the backgrounds and visual style as well as sorting options for your music. Multiplayer is 1-4 players locally, and there's an online ranking mode (but no online play is listed) where you can trade jam sessions and interact with challenge modes. And all of this is planned to simply be downloaded directly to your PSP (well, downloaded through the PC-based PlayStation Store and then uploaded to your PSP ... but still, no UMD), which will hopefully mean a huge number of gamers will pick it up and get involved in its online evolution since nobody will have to go to the mall to get the game.

UPDATE: Surprising us again, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has actually launched Beats today along with the new PlayStation store -- the game is ¿4.99 and is rated 3+ by PEGI. Additional features described on the official UK page are Game Sharing (which allows players to share the game with friends and play along if they don't have their own copy yet) and a better description of Jamming mode -- here you create your own music with pre-set music samples. The official UK page mentions MP3 playback, which is welcome news for those not sure if the game would only support Sony's powerful but rarely-sed ATRAC-3 codec. An official release date for the US version has not yet been set, but with the game out in the UK, it should be just a matter of time for North America as well.

For gamers crushed that the PSP's previous custom soundtrack music game Traxion was cancelled, Beats looks to deliver on the fun of playing your music rather than just listening to it. SCE Europe is producing the game, and the title is planned for release in both Europe and North America. An exact release date has not been announced, so check back with IGN or the PlayStation Store for more info.

Syphon Filter Combat Ops

Sony Computer Entertainment America today announced that Syphon Filter: Combat Ops is now available through the PlayStation PC Store for just 9.99USD. You can use the Mission Modifier feature to customize maps and missions and then upload them for 8-player online action. This one includes the new Retrieval and Sabotage mode, playable in Wi-Fi Ad Hoc and Infrastructure.

Shinobido: Tales of the Ninja

boxshot.jpg

Leaping from rooftop to rooftop, dropping onto unwitting enemies' shoulders for an instant kill, stealing valuable documents and then escaping the enemy fortress before anyone has even noticed you were there, this is what being a ninja is all about.

It may only be a handheld game, derived from last year's minor PS2 release of the same name, but when Shinobido gives you the chance to pull off great moments like the one above, it's hard not to be awed by how satisfying a gaming experience can be offered on the PSP. Sadly, the designers seem determined to limit such sublime sequences in favour of providing an endless array of alternate mission types, many of which stray far from the Tenchu-style thrills that Shinobido could have offered in spades.

Syphon Filter®: Logan's Shadow

image_114x196.jpg

image_4.jpg

Desperate. Alone. Betrayed.

Gabe Logan stands alone. They've disbanded his team. His partner is missing and accused of treason. How far will he go to find the truth? Syphon Filter®: Logan's Shadow will keep you wondering who to trust, featuring an engaging storyline, all-new combat actions and underwater missions.

As the dramatic sequel to the IGN 2006 PSP Game of the Year, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow promises to be even better delivering new and enhanced features, including:

* New Submerged Missions: Experience underwater exploration and combat with full 360 degree navigation.
* Strike with Precision: Target enemy body parts utilizing an arsenal of more than 55 high-tech weapons and advanced vision technology.
* New Combat Moves: Use “Blind Fire” to send enemies scurrying for shelter or grab hold and use them as a “Human Shield” to preserve health.
* Enhanced Hand-to-Hand Melee Attacks: Dispatch enemies in a variety of ways, including deadly knife attacks.
* Hollywood-Style Production: featuring a gripping storyline by acclaimed author Greg Rucka (Queen & Country series) and an all-new soundtrack by international recording artist Azam Ali (300).
* Visually Stunning Environments: High-resolution textures, detailed animation, combines with the Havoc engine to deliver console-caliber graphics on the PSP® system.
* Robust Online Experience: 4-on-4 multiplayer battles across 8 maps and 5 game modes, plus enhanced community features including player profiles, buddy lists, leaderboards and ranked cell matches.
