A friend asked me to look at her kid's PS3. Just a red LED, no response to power or eject controls. I also connected a network cable to the RJ45 socket to see if there was any activity there, but no sign of life there either.
I have repaired many a TV, sat receiver, even the odd PC (shhh, don't tell anyone), but just wanted to know if this is a known issue before opening up.

Thanks in advance.

Is there a red power dot next to the power button?

I think beyond that point it will require opening up, could be simple thing as a faulty power button or a more complex issue. Try powering the console by inserting a disc into the drive!

Yep, that's the one.

There seems to be a disc in it already, so I guess the top will need to come off.
I was only asking before wasting any time on it, because I spent nearly an hour carefully dismantling a 360S a few months ago, only to discover the fault was (a) common and (b) hardy worth repairing- so was just curious to see if this standby thing was also a known issue.
I'll post more if I anything noteworthy.....
