Lifetime sales of the PlayStation 3 are on course to surpass the Xbox 360's within a year, CVG reports.

Sales figures from the end of the last fiscal quarter reveal that the Sony platform has gained significant ground of its competitor, which has been on the market one year longer.

As of September 30, the PS3 had shifted 41.6 million units, while the Xbox 360 stood at 44.6 million. However, the former moved 3.5 million units during the last three months, compared to the 360's 2.8 million.

Should this trend continue, the PlayStation 3 will overtake the Microsoft system in approximately a year's time.

It is thought that the popularity of both platform holders' motion technology - Sony's Move and Microsoft's Kinect - will have a significant impact on the lifetime hardware chart.

Interesting that the Wii sales have been slumping recently as well since Nintendo posted a 6 month loss but I imagine the Wii is still the top seller of the 3 by some distance. But with no end of this generation in sight any time soon fanboys across the world that give a feck about sales will be talking smack and biting their fingers until the next gen console arrives.

Personally I've never been bothered about sales I just critique the consoles after a while and enjoy their games but it's nice to see things aren't as set in stone as some people think they are.

I also think Kinect could well sell more than PS Move as it is a more unique product.

I also reckon Microsoft will be first out the gates again next time, another rush job. Unless Nintendo announce a new HD console at next years E3 but I can't see that happening. I hope so though lol.
