I just read a review below on Amazon, does anyone know if its true that the firmware needs an update on the 40 GB model. Im on 3 mobile broadband so i wouldnt be able to use it with the ps3 to update the firmware.

I would recommend to anyone wanting a PS3 to try and get a 60gig model as the 40 gig has half the usb ports no memory stick pro , SD/SD micro or cf memory card ports its also lacking the ethernet cable also not to mension the backwards compatibility . Also the firrm ware needs an update on all models so if you lack aa broadband connection dvd upscaling aand blu-ray playback is not what it should be

all Ps3's not just 40gig need to be update the firmware, you can downlaod the file yourself and update via a usb stick or update vai the ps3

Would it be possible to connect a usb cable directly from the PS3 to my laptop like you can with a PSP and do updates that way.

I dont know about that mate, but possible, someone else might know. you may also be able to burn the update to disk (cd) and do the update that way but i dont know never tried it.

i dont think you can update from usb via a laptop

the easiest way as mentioned is via a memory stick or portable hard drive

http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/guides/detail/item60697/Download-now/

go to the above link and download it, then you need to make a file on the memory stick called "PS3" then in that folder make one called "UPDATE" then put the file you download from the above link into the update folder

then on the ps3 the go to system update then choose storage media.

not 100% sure if this can be done by burning the update to cd but it probably will. would only cost you the price of a blank cd to find out.

if the you only have one to play bluray discs and not for online gaming then you dont need to apply any updates. it will blurays straight out of the box.

if you want to use the new features of bluray 2.0 then it will need a firmware update applied to use bluray 2.0
