Home automation and future proofing-what would you do?

I am currently converting my garage to a granny flat for when i renovate my house, the first fix wiring has been done and i have ran a Cat6 cable to every light switch and socket and back to where i am going to my switch so i can automate everything.

Any one else have any suggestions on what i should do to future proof/automate the place before i start slabbing the place?

I’m away but for anyone else that reads this it might be useful.

Television locations:
I would take 3 cat6 to every television point from a CDP (Central Distribution Point). And 1 shotgun coax.
If you can spare the budget run a dual fibre cable, they are getting much cheaper now.

Make sure you run you hdmi cables to any local cupboards. And they are very high quality 4K minimum spec cables.
and 1 cat6 from tv to cupboard, you won't use this but its a get out of jail should the HDMI fail.

If you are putting items in a cupboard local to your television then run around 4 cat6 to these cupboards from CDP. Gaming you want pings at lowest possible and cable will be much lower than WiFi.

Speakers:
Run from the CDP a quad speaker cable (4 cores) and loop over to the second stereo speaker, cuts down labour.
If installing in ceiling speakers run a cat6 to one in each room. This will allow a POE access point to be hidden out of sight.

Roof cabling:
SKY Q, now means we don’t need loads of cables to roofs so just make sure you have two coax at minimum for sky Q.
Free view = 1 coax
Dab = 1 coax
Moving Dish = work out what you need minimum 2 coax and also a cat6 in case motor needs voltage (not coax driven).
* all back to the CDP

Normal Data:
Depends on what I s being used for but for a computer desk it don’t hurt to run 3/4 cat6 cables from the CDP.

CCTV:
If you are thinking of having cctv, its a good idea to run the cabling now if you can.
1x Cat6 to each CCTV camera position, we only use POE IP cameras now. this is a nice and simple installation.
Think about what you are trying to view also, I personally like the motorised lens cameras 2.8 -12mm. (I think that is what they are). they allow zooming.
Run cables back to the CDP.

HVAC:
heating, ventilation, air conditioning, this area might need the assistant of skilled labour (electricians, plumbers, AC).
However you want to get the integration right or at least future proof it.
I would consider running 2 cat6 to the boiler position, and 1 cat6 to each thermostat position, and 1 cat6 to any other controls.
What this will do is give you flexibility in the future if something new comes out that is say POE and integrates into newer boilers or thermostats.
Run all cables back to the CDP.

Intercom / Door entry:
We normally use either savant video or BPT video for our systems, you will need to check out documentation for your selection.
2 x cat6 from CDP to the entry panel (outside of house).
2 x cat6 from CDP to the handset location (internal handset).
Again, check your manufacturer this is just a typical recommendation.

Usually a rack in a cupboard, you would install all your equipment like sky boxes, routers, switches, etc.

Install a correctly sized patch panels for cat6, coax, etc - and patch all your cables and make sure you test them after and label them (don't forget to label them this is a very important part and always missed!)

Network Switches, I would personally make sure you have enough POE ports (power over ethernet) and also make sure that the standard is correct I think the current standard that will do all devices is POE +af make sure your devices are compatible with the switch you are installing!
If you want to save some money, its a good idea to have a small 4/8 port POE switch and then your normal 24port gigabit switch etc as the 24port POE switches are very expensive still.

This gives you a clean install around your home, with just television on walls and one remote to control it all. This is an advanced installation usually having a HDbaseT-POH matrix

A matrix allows you to install all equipment in a cupboard, smaller matrixes have a form of 4x4
4 sources and 4 outputs, this will allow you to watch any source on any television at any time. It’s basically high end switching.

Remote control, wether this is an app on your phone and you are using IP to control all devices or a simple harmony learning remote, you will need a brain/processor/remote kit to do the work of the switching. one remote will allow you to select between sky, Apple TV, xbox source, ps4 source, and control the volume of an AV receiver for example. other wise you will be left with remotes everywhere!

Final note:
This is an ever increasing faster than you know it subject and might not be the norm in a month or so lol.
