As a last resort (i.e. you've try all the other posts first (including posts made after this one!)) you can attempt to fix winsock yourself by using this util: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

NB the above utility will change some of your registry settings. Before running it I strongly recommend that you back up your registry.

Have u checked the all the settings?

Assumptions. Ure Broadband comes into PC via ethernet from a router or modem.
  1. Upgrade Ethernet card to latest drivers.

  2. Goto Control Panel-->Network Connections.
    Right click on the network card the modem is plugged into--->properties
    Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    Copy exactly the settings from ure PC to the lappy.

  3. Goto Run and type cmd /k ipconfig /all
    Does it have a number after default Gateway. i.e. - 95 . 213 . 2 . 3
    Is it the same number on ure pc?

    Then type ping then the number after Default Gateway.
    If ure NTL try type ping 194.168.4.100
    Does it come up with Request timed out 4 times?

  4. Goto Control Panel-->Internet Options.
    Goto Connections and click Lan Settings
    Make Sure Automatically detect settings is ticked. (again copy settings from PC.)

£50 Test. Forget That.....

Winsock - a Microsoft Windows DLL file that basically allows Windows to use web browsers, FTP programs, and others.

If there is a prob with Winsock then perhaps this download might help.

lol... £50 for a windsok test what is a windsok, this is what i found on google http://www.windsok.com

if it's a second hand laptop reinstall windows m8, the current version could have corrupt files or hidden spyware(s) on causing the problem hence the windsok problem (lol)
