just replaced a mates mobo and processor for him and when it booted up it got to the windows logon screen and said about activation needed . Question , i know he bought it from a retail store about 18 mths ago and it as the proper sticker on the case etc , when i try and put in the code from the sticker it just goes back to phone or by internet .the pc was one of them with software bundled not a disc from what i can gather . any ideas or will he have to pay for re-activation .

you can purchase oem software with those parts (much cheaper) from what i gather the o/s interacts with the motherbaord bios this generates a code specific to your machine. go back to the seller of the processor ect and ask for oem windows should be around £30 or so for xp home i think.

that will explain it then TBC , the mobo or cpu died and i picked up a 2gb cpu mobo and fan package from maplins for 69 squid . thought it was going far too easy lol . xp is cack for chopping about imo .

If there is a sticker with the code on the pc then all you should have to do is phone microsoft and they will give you an activation code. You should not have to pay anything for this. With XP if there has been a major upgrade to the hardware then it will require reactivation and Microsoft will do this via the phone at no cost when you explain about the upgrade.

i did ring them mate , got through to a not very good english speaking chap who asked for the first 3 sets of keys that where on the activation screen and then made me fill in the upgrade section with the code from the sticker . he then said i had to get in touch with the people that sold my mate the box . i'll give them another ring and see what happens . thanks .
