Windows XP and Microsoft

Hi all.

Now that I'm an XP convert, I've heard that Microsoft will soon be releasing a service pack for XP which will not install on (or deactivate ?) "unofficial" copies of XP.

Does anyone know whether it's true, and if so, what we can do about it?

Many thanks,

GP.

See this article .

It states . . .

Microsoft's controversial Windows Product Activation (WPA) technology is also seeing two minor modifications in XP SP1, neither of which will affect any legitimate users. First, the company discovered that the majority of pirated XP copies out there are tied to single volume license product key. So Microsoft has alerted the company about the problem, changed their key, and disabled it for use after SP1. So anyone using this pirated key will be unable to upgrade to SP1 or any future updates via Windows Update, Sullivan said.

So I guess I can't upgrade to SP1?

Oh well.

But you can easily change your key into a non-blacklisted one

read about it here: hxxp://www.mwright.plus.com/xp.htm

Thanks - I've changed my key by following the instructions on the page you gave. Don't know if the original one I used was black listed anyway, but best to be safe I suppose.
