hi guys . i put this in other as not sure if software or hardware , basically i have a acer ax3400 , all was working fine , then the comp shut down , i thought it was doin updates , then it popped up with the startup repair screen , so i left it to do what it had to do , then it rebooted itself and came up with some files may be damaged or corrupted , option 1 was start up repair , or start windows normally , tried windows normally and it just rebooted and came up with same message , tried the repair agin , and it said it had been repaired , when booted it back up , it took forever and a day and was on windows 7 basic , could not change it to any of the other thmes as was all greyed out ,and would take forever just to open a window , so switched off and repaired again , this time it said could not repair automaticaly , so would i be best to just reset to factory settings or is the hard drive naffed

will get back to anyone who replys as off to work

thx in advance

Load back up,image if you have one.

i dont have a backup , was going to do one , then forgot to

Run a SMART test on the drive (popping it into another computer if needed).

If it passes, reinstall Windows. If it doesn't, replace.

Either way, just in case your key isn't installed on the hardware, you might want to run Activation Backup and Restore before doing anything. (Saves having to use the key on the licence sticker.)

cant get on that comp to do anything at the moment

Can you not load windows in safe mode (keep pressing F8 key during boot procedure)?

ok story so far , did another startup repair , left it goin while i went work , got home fri night all was up and running and was on the proper win 7 theme , all was working , although a bit sluggish , but managed to cope with it , was fine all day yesterday , today was working ok , then all of sudden got blue screen saying something had malfuctioned and windows had been shut down , then it rebooted with start windows normally or in safe mode , hit the strat normally ,black screen with bar at bottom saying loading files , got about just over half way , then got black screen saying status 0x00000e9 , error unexpected i/o error has occured ,tried to load windows again using the startup repar and same message , so rebooted and pressed alt and f10 to go to the boot option to reload win 7 got a screen come up with saying hit windows boot options esc or continue , so hit continue , now its come up with the e recovery management ,although the light was flashing to say it was doin something while saying please wait a moment , the light seems to have stopped and just on the screen with the cursor spinning

Looks like your hard drive is on the way out. If it boots properly again Id burn a copy of windows and get a new hard drive.

Do you hear any sounds from the drive? This is generally a good indication that the drive maybe failing. As above, get it to boot if possible, make the backup and change the HDD and see if this resolves your issue.

there are no noises coming from the drive, i dug out a copy of win7 that i have running on my other comp ,all went well untill got to this point see pic attached , then came up with instalation cancelled , all files are not available , so i not sure wether to try new hdd or just try the install again , disc should be ok as i said its runnin on my other comp

Hi, looks like the sectors on the HDD may be corrupt. Without wiping the drive and running a check disk, it's hard to say where these sectors may be. Could you take this faulty HDD out and mount on another PC / laptop and perform the check? Be careful though, if the check finds orphaned sectors and tries to fix them, this could corrupt the data on the drive, so back it up if you can before doing the check.

now have another message on screen windows failed to start . a recent software or hardware change might be the cause to fix the problem

1 insert windows install disc and restart comp
2 choose language setings
3 repair your computer

status: 0xc000000f

info: boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

have tried the above a few times now repair does nothing just cannot fix

just put disc in to try again now when it gets to the part to copy files , it comes up with

the file or directory E:\$WINDOWS.~LS is corrupt and unreadable please run the Chkdsk utility

and also this one E:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther

eventually managed to get to install from recovery management on the drive , with just few teething problems when loaded , for example most pages in browser where either coming up with done but error on page , or page would load in and the say unable to load page ,or as in the case of forums , would get the home page fine , and the sub forum page fine , but when trying to view replies , would only get the first message , I put this down to being on ie8 , so I downloaded, win 7 service pack 1 , and tried again and net was working fine as still is, so updated that to ie11 , think the hdd may still need replacing at some point as after installing ie11 and flash player , there was a sound like the fan speeding up and down , so took the case of to check , ie by putting ear to fan , that was running smooth as can be , moved over to where the drive is and noise in ear got louder , one other thing that I found strange was although I said to do a fresh install , when I went to computer and looked in data folder a lot of the stuff i had put in there was still there

As Little_pob has mentioned; get the diagnositic tools for the manufacturer of your HDD run this. It does sound like the HDD is on the way out. Id make a backup of any personal files you dont waant to lose (perhaps to free cloud) as soon as possible, and invest in a new HDD if the current isnt under warranty?
