hi guys - afew weeks ago i dropped my toshiba sattelite l300 laptop, luckily it still worrked, all usb ports were working fine, now all od a sudden none of the usb ports work..ive been in device manager to see anything that is unusual and uninstalled anything relating to the usb ports..rebooted laptop and it insatlled drivers again but still none of the usb ports work..i always use a nano reciever linkedto optical mouse but the nano reciever has stopped working..tested it on my pc and works fine..the one usb port on the right side of the laptop has suddenly gone really tight, i cant get any usb connector in the port..any ideas ta.

Might be worth getting a new usb port of bay and soldering it to board.also might be worth reinstaling windows etc.if you test if there is any power getting to usb might also be a goer.

looks like the ports are damaged or come away from the motherboard..after a closer look the nano recievers that i use caused the ports to become bent when i dropped the laptop..managed to straigten the port on the right side and can now use my nano usb reciever with my optical wireless mouse but the two on the other side the esata and normal port are not working and the top one in particular is broken....time for new lappy i think..

i see that my laptop has an ExpressCard Slot according to spec HERE so can i put in one of those cards in there that has a couple of USB 2.0 ports..seen a few on the bay but there are different sizes, can someone tell me which will fot my laptop slot?..and will usb 3.0 type work or is it only usb 2.0?..cheers

On a lot of lappys the usb ports are plug in so perhaps its here where your problem is, if your confident enough open it up for inspection and if you do find there hard mounted check for crack lines in the pcb.

Additionally be careful with a hub on a laptop as they can easily overload the power lines rendering the ports dead, as not alot of them have over current protection.

Good Luck

Mine has done the same, the 2 on the right hand side, its an acer 5750

Mines an Acer 5220, dated now but a good workhorse it as a weak port on the left hand side but i can live with it, the most common killer is overloading the ports current capacity ie drawing of more then the port can supply, there will/should be a SM idiot diode in there somewhere but finding the bugger is a little time consuming and not worth the effort, you could of course find a 5v onboard source and patch that over but again probably not worth it unless you have it torn down for other reasons.
