my friend has a problem with windows 8.1, he constantly has 100% disk usage even after reinstalling it completely, any ideas?

Thanks for the reply but it turns out that the hard drive failed a diagnostic , therefore we are go to try and replace it

I was going to suggest that, stupidly low/faulty memory presents this symptom too.
First instinct was to suggest a SMART test too, but thought I'd see what came up on Google as I've not used Win 8 much...

I had this with mine a while ago 3 things I checked to get it working again
don't know which worked but
used malwarebytes pro which did find malware and removed
took off the last software before it happened
and did a smart check with Seagate tools which can be dl ed free on google
anyways after all that it worked ok again

If the hard drive is knackered windows will show a warning on every boot so if this is not happening then as you have noted it could have been malware causing the problem.
if you persistently have problems then get a new hard drive or get something like Hirens boot cd and Nuke the hard drive clean and reinstall windows.

Not entirely true, certain hdd errors like bad sectors would only be noticed when trying to read/write to that specific bad sector which may not be during booting :)

Yes but I'm not on about errors im on about hard drive fail which will show only at boot stating that there will be an imminent hard drive fail.
