MSE + Malwarebytes - Never had any major problems.

Now, just before the haters vent their anger thru their keyboard at the mere mention of MSE (as everyone has an opinion thats better than the last mans) i would like to point out that NO ONE AV Product catches everything and they all have their faults. Personal responsibility and education makes a MASSIVE difference. I download all sorts from everywhere, visit all all sorts of sites but being careful what i click/download/visit is what makes the difference. Prevention is always better than cure.

comodo or try immunet which uses the excellent clamav (the industry default for servers)
add teatimer from spybot and don't forget cryptoprevent from foolishIT

Who do you bank with? Most banks do a free antivirus if you sign up to Internet banking. My old fella is with Barclays so I Nick his 3 pc kaspersky code every year. I'm with Yorkshire bank but I have heard bad things about the one they offer. Might be worth a look though whoever your with.

Of all the ones out there the one that works well at the moment is Bit Defender. However as I have found with all these virus programs they tend to be good one year and the next year they fall behind.

I always wonder what posters mean by "good". Obviously it has to effective, but also important it needs to be light on resources, especially on older or lower-spec machines.

So how do we know if it's "good"?

Personally I have always used AVG Free. And some common sense. Never had any problem with the former.....

No Antivirus is perfect, as everyone will use more or less ressources, though, they can never 100% protect any computer, as new virueses will, if so, only be detected later or even too late.
When did any of your antivirus programs detect any threat?, mine, no one for the last 1 or 2 years....

avg is good but they seam to block keys qick now days, but dont stop me from re doing the key with oly.

I'd still recommend Kaspersky, sticked with it since last year and have nothing to complain anymore, they had a few problems after Windows 8.1 was released though

Yes I agree with you. It appears to be a trade off between the more aggressive it is at detecting the higher the resource usage will be, thus slowing down your machine, so a compromise needs to be made between these two factors. I don't go trawling through all and any webpages and running shitty download services just to get any file, so on the basis of this it doesn't need to be all on and fully loaded. I'm sure if it had to protect a teenagers bedroom PC where they generally don't give a Fu*k and go on any page their mates link them to it would be a whole different story.
Horses for courses as they say
