Hi all
Yesterday i fitted a crucial mx100 SSD drive (256gb)
Everything seems ok and i installed windows 7 64 bit
But ive noticed when i install something i lose alot of available space.
For instance i installed the motherboard drivers (audio etc) and the available space dropped from 203GB to 199Gb.

I then installed my nvidia graphic driver (216mb) and the available space then dropped to 196GB.

So thats 3GB of space for a 216mb driver?

Anybody know why or have tips to why its taking up so much space?

Cheers

Thanks mate.
So if i disable restore points is there any files it leaves behind that i can/should delete?
Ive never known it happen on my HDD so is this a problem for SSD drives?

Restore points happen on SSD and non-SSD drives.

Have a look here about how to delete them,

Bad Request

Cheers pal.

Ive just never noticed windows taking 3gb from a HDD after installing a graphic driver before.

@Kryton did you buy it at scan?

£75.90 for 256gb seems fair :)

Crucial MX100 256GB SATA III 6GB/s Solid State Drive SSD - CT256MX100SSD1 - Scan.co.uk

I was talking about them in a previous post I made before I went away, and want to get one for my PC...

Are they any good mate?

got it from currys mate, was priced down from 89 to 79.

im really impressed with it now ive sorted the little hiccup with missing space, windows boots in less than 10 seconds even with several start up programs like anti virus etc.

programs, games and apps open in a instant and game loading times are so much faster.
They are really worth the money for saying its the cheapest 1 ive come across apart from pny models you can get on ebay.
I wish i had gone for 1 sooner. I might get the 512gb version 2 as a 2nd drive.

you mean to mount it in the case? Theres a spacer but no adaptor but my zalman case has a bracket to mount a ssd. Im sure it will be pretty easy to find a way of fitting it tho.
It does however come with an activation key for acronis true image HD so you can make true backups of the drive if you should ever need to restore from a backup.

There is a great bit of free SSD software for your computer that tells the health of your SSD etc..
Ran it on my desktop with a ocz vertex SSD and says mines good until 2023..
Think it is called "SSD life"
Also most SSD manufacturers have their own SSD tools to keep your drive in good health so search them out as they help extend the life of your SSD..
Also you need to enable ACHI mode in bios to enable trim support..so check your set up.

Found this May be of help..
This tutorial is for those who are already running Windows 7 on their SSD as a boot drive. If like me, you first installed to hard drive then used an image backup program to put the OS on the SSD, then this step is necessary to allow Windows 7 to set the proper settings for SSD use and set things up for optimizing the OS after burning the firmware and/or cleaning the drive to factory specs. If you installed directly to the your SSD, you don't need to follow this step, but it can be helpful if you followed the XP and vista SSD guides and things just aren't up to snuff.

*** read all the steps first so you can create the images and boot USB and CD/DVD and print the instructions before you start***

FIRST.... MAKE A BACKUP IMAGE just in case!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Be sure to create the restore disk, too.

Basically, you need to do a repair install of Windows 7 so Windows can set itself up properly for SSD use. The following link will step you through this step:
Windows 7 Help Forums

When done, we need to verify that TRIM is active. At a command prompt (start/run/cmd), type the following: fsutil.exe behavior query DisableDeleteNotify

It should respond back with DisableDeleteNotify=0 if trim support is ready and active. If it is not, type fsutil.exe behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0

This will set Windows 7 to use TRIM when the drive and drivers are ready to do so.

Next, we need to make sure our ATA/ATAPI ACHI controller is set to use trim.
The new INTEL chipset drivers 9.6.0.1014 support TRIM! Use these instead of the MS AHCI ones for Intel Chipsets.
Intel® Download Center

If your controller chipset does not support trim then use the MS driver.

To see/change it, go to device manager and select IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. If it says "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller", you are good to go. If not, double click it and select the driver tab. Click update driver. Select browse. Select let me pick. select Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller.

Once it has reboot and all is fine, then U can go on to the next step (after making an IMAGE backup of the whole SSD with the new changes (I use Windows backup)).

If you install (rather than clone) Win7 or Win8 to SSD, it will make all the appropriate settings. The only thing I will add is to make sure that AHCI is enabled in BIOS before you start.

Restore points, temporary files and windows updates i think :)

Just delete C:\Temp and C:\Windows\Temp

Its 100% not problem in HW

I would suggest that other items may have been selected in part of the page, which was obscure to you, when you selected to install the drivers.

Was this third party software or did the drivers come with the card.
You may have installed Norton anti virus without realising it.

Not knowing how knowledgeable your computing skills are? I am sorry if I am telling you how to suck eggs.

If it's a fresh install, see what directories report unusual size and check what's inside. Could be restore points.

i have lenovo t420 few of them and i have same problem with free space lost. I disable and delete restore points and also delete temp files and free space returned. i also replace hdd with ssd intel.

In a sdd, only the OS, drivers and nothing else installed. (if you are a gamer the game you use)
Windows 7 64, is installed on a processor that works with 64 bit and 4 or more of memory. Otherwise no sense.
