Hi
I have a dell dimension 520 which has been running windows 7 with no probs for 12 months.
Since yesterday the speaker icon in system tray has a little x on a red background next to it saying ‘No Audio Output device is installed’.
No audio devices appear in device manager so nothing for me to roll back/ install new drivers to.
As the the sound for this PC is an onboard chip (Sigmatel 9227) can I assume that the chip is knackered and I will have to install a separate sound card?
Thanks

Go to dell website and see what drivers are there for system. Update to latest and also install your sound drivers from there

Already tried that m8, when you try to run the driver update software it tells me that the 'device object is not present'.

Or run the tool to automatically detect your device?
I ran the diagnostic software from dell which identified my machine then proceeded to inform me my sound was ok because my pci slot was working OK!
This is an onboard sound chip so dell diagnostics was a waste of space.
I'm assuming that if your onboard sound goes bad the only choice you have is to install a separate sound card?

The Service Tag was unrevealing too? If so, then a discrete sound card is probably your only answer. I'd be budgeting for a new PC though since a main board fault usually escalates.

Yep, putting in the service tag did not make any difference to the hardware diagnostic.
The PC is 7 years old now and so maybe time to think about investing in new kit.
Thanks guys for your replies.

Thanks m8, it looks like a good tool and I'll bear it in mind for future problems.
I ended up installing an old sound card I had spare and it's giving much better sound than the Dell onboard chip ever did.
