Hi folks. Managed to pick up a virus somewhere (think it was the eldest downloading Minecraft videos!) and having a lot of trouble getting rid of it. It wont let me access any antivirus homepages or Microsofts website, and when I run Avast or Malwarebytes they erro out with "Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files (x86)" and the path to the program, even though it's there.

Can anyone give me a few pointers on how to get rid of the little shit, please? I tried using Eset online scan and it hung afer 8 hours!

Thanks

Can't, m8: clicking on Avast brings up the error, like it's hiding the exe file from Windows so it won't run. Managed to get malwarebytes running, going to do a full scan now. Quick scan didn't fix it

Try booting into safe mode and running virus scans.
Any idea what virus is? IE do you get any fake virus scanners popping up?

OK, I am eating my words here.

For a good week and a bit now my PC fan has been going full pelt... noticed but not done anything about it.
Tonight (NZ time) my wife says she cant open a ZIP file of some photos... I xfer to my laptop so I can try and fix it. I pop into task manager for some reason... to see this exe called coin-miner sat there eating up all the ****ing resources...
Blame the ZIP... but then think... this is why my laptop fan has been running so often...

quick scan on defender proves it.
True to my word, I am now typing on a reinstalled version of win 8... chrome is awesome in the user settings etc

a few apps to install... my one main working folder backed up... jobs a good un!

Could do with a re-install myself but its the thought of re-installing all the programs again lol

Thanks for all the advice, peeps: finally got a chance to log in and report back!

Managed to get going again using Kapersky multi fix. From that, I got Avast and Malawarebytes scanning and deleted the thing. Dont know what it was, but it changed my access so I couldn't write files (when I downloaded stuff, it wouldnt write to disc) and borked up my shared movies folder and stuff on my network. Think Im operational again now though.

Thanks again!
