My XP Pro will not shut down now when I click turn off it reboots I have reinstalled windows but the same thing happens anybody know of any fixes.

Hi M8

Mine did the same so i updated my bios which seems to have cured the problem. May also be a fix on the windows update site if you hav'nt looked already

it does seem to be m/board dependent seems gigabyte boards ok 3 friends all have bx2000 boards all ok, the same cd (oops) used on 2 other machines and both of them reboot rather than shutdown i think soyo and intel m/boards, reloading didnt cure. check with your m/board manafacturer to see if they have xp update

It did it on mine. I have gigbyte board. When I have my system running smooth I always make a backup up of the partition using Drive Image pro. I reinstalled the image, took about an hour to reinstall about 3.9gb and now its fine again.

No fixes on the Msoft site I have also checked the asus site (motherboard) nothing there either if you guys find out anything else let me know Ta

Hi Allroad <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> I'm using XP Pro on an Asus M\B with no problems, have a look in the BIOS for power options - I can't remember exactly what without restarting but there should be something to do with soft off and hardware off, I think <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

Hi M8 I had a look in the Bios as you said the only option in pwoer off that I can see is soft off ie hold the power button for 4 secs or more to turn off XP still will not shut down it keeps rebooting it has to be switched of at the power button Have you anymore help, Cheers M8 Allroad

When you say you have reinstalled windows, do you mean over the top of existing installation? if you do then most of the settings and registers relating to previous installed software will still be there. It could be a software conflict. When it happened to me I had installed about six items or so. I refused to reboot after each one when given the choice cos its a drag. After I eventually rebooted then thats when it started. I presume that it was a software conflict that caused it but I dont know which one.

Hi m8's, i don't know about xp, but , i received similar probs with win98se, it had to do with enabling fast shutdown in bios and once i had sorted this out there was no prob!, hope this helps Billy <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">

Had XP pro for a while no probs in shutting down, asus 761chipset athalon 850 prosser.<br />Though i did have starting up probs cured with a bios update.

Hello, this problem happens because the ACPI function in bios is disabled. Enable the function and reinstall the system with this status, the system will shut down automatically when you shut down the system

If you have a Zip drive in your PC then disconnect it from the power and see if your system will now shut down (sounds weird but....just try it.)

If not then sounds like a shorting problem or maybe a faulty switch

Have you tried turning it on...then just before it boots to windows turning it off with the switch? it should just turn off...if it reboots then its a shorting problem
