Hey guys,

Now I'm not a complete novice when it comes to PC systems and the like but lately (the last couple of weeks or so) when I turn on my PC the power light comes on and stays on for about 20 secs or so (haven't timed it yet), then goes off for about 20 secs, then comes back on for about 5 secs, then off again for the same amount of time. It does this for about 3 times then finally boots...

I've stripped it down and cleaned everything, fresh silver based thermal paste. I thought it would have been the heatsink/CPU when I first opened it as the HS was coated in quite a bit of dust ( yes I know regular cleaning blah blah), but evidently not. Its not the HDD as I have installed my SSD for a test run.

Any light you guys can shed would be great.

Cheers guys

t's only a 450W but I haven't got anything demanding too much power. Its the exact same setup as I've always had in the rig, it's just that I'm having this problem the last couple weeks...

Sounds like the PSU is on its way out, usually the capacitors fail after a while and they do exactly what you have described.

if not the psu, try changing the ram. sometimes changing their order can even do the trick. my old XPS desktop does this all the time.
the usual fix is pull and reseat all the cards. or cycle them. cards 1,2,3,4 becomes 4,1,2,3

Cheers bud I never thought of trying that.

This reminds me of an argument I had with a so-called PC "technician" (Ideal Computers, Edinburgh for reference), a brand new PC I'd bought from them was constantly crashing whilst cold, but once warmed up (30 min's or so) it ran flawlessly. "Ah" said the twatnician, you must have it in an enclosed cabinet and it's overheating. Well I'm sorry, but isn't the clue there? But no, he would NOT have it. Turned out it was a faulty graphics card. He still never admitted he was wrong. Or stupid!:bangshead:

I love the seasoned 'technicians'...half of them probably don't know which end plugs in the wall :what:

Yep, typical college graduates... think they've got all the brains in the world but not an ounce of common sense. :silly:

Before you change the PSU. Do a visual check on the MB capacitors and see if some of them are blown.

Nooo I paid £12.42.

Lets just say I managed to exploit a pricing error via a major online retailer through my work place
