i've got a samsung 2.5 sata hard drive and decided to get a caddy for it. the drive has no consistency whatsoever through the usb. sometimes you get a beep beep from it. i then bought another caddy and got it to work. but now the hdd is behaving the same as with the first caddy. windows doesnt see it at all. but if i plug it into my motherboard it is faultless. any ideas.

did you buy the same make of caddy.... i had this very same problem with a 2.5 drive... i got a different make and it work perfect after...

are you using a Y cable, if so make sure you got it plug into 2 usb sockets cause of the power the hard drive needs...

how long is the USB lead you are using? my WD only works with one that is about 6" long, if I use my 2m one I use with my phone it refuses to work.

the first caddy is a freecom which my brother in law says works fine. the second is a no name from fleebay.
i need it to plug in to my dvd usb player which only has 1 usb socket. i've got the y cable

dunno if its any help or not but when i installed a new hdd a few weeks ago on win7 it didnt show up show i had to right click on my computer - click manage - navigate to storage/disk managment - then assign it a drive letter and all worked fine after that, as i said not sure if it will help or not as with my external drives i dont have to do anything like that i just plug and play and am guessing that should be the case with a caddy!
