Hi

I've been having some problems with this for some time now. It's got to the point where I cannot put anything on the disk without this error popping up. It usually "E:/$mft." that is shown in the error balloon.

It is a 1Tb Seagate and only has just happened with fresh install windows XP.

I have just tried burning a dvd file from it using Imgburn and look at the log !!!!

Anyone help.

Tried different usb ports/leads etc ??

Cheers

It is a 1Tb Seagate and only has just happened with fresh install windows XP.

Are you sure that you have installed the correct chipset drivers for your motherboard?
If you can, try connecting the drive to another pc and test it from there… if it works then you have a pc problem if not, you have a drive problem.

Quick look on Google. It looks like it might be an issue with the Master File Table. Connect the drive. Go to start > run > cmd > e:\sfc scannow (assuming that the external drive is volume E:\)

For what it's worth, although 90% of the time it's fine, you should try to avoid removing USB drives without first dismounting them in XP. I've had mechanical and flash drives revert to RAW state when I've not done so.

Also turn off system restore for the drive...

Not got a clue mate, would it be wiped with a fesh install of XP ?

Well it failed to burn dvd as it stated - 'could not find the correct file'

I am downloading to the drive with newsgroups but keep getting the -

E:\name of file d/loading

When i then select the drive to have a look in there all the folders are there BUT each one is empty inside ???

Just unplugged the usb and plugged back in and getting -

USB device not recognised Blah blah etc.....

Arrghh it's causing pc to freeze upas well..

Will plug into netbook now

If it's within warranty then copy everything off it you want to keep and send it back to seagate as faulty, that way you'll get a new (well referbished) drive back.

I've had 3 external seagate drives die on me, luckily all within warranty.

Also check that your anti virus software isnt accessing the drive when you are writing as this will cause all sorts of problems.

Well i've tried it on 2 other laptops and it just gets stuck on autorun.

So i disabled that and it shows in My Computer. When i double click the drive it shows all the folders and then freezes/unresponsive.

When i try the Seagate tool it just says scanning and stays there. If i unplug it it finds my main HDD quickly.

I aint got a clue when i bought it though or from where. Its 1.5Tb as well.

Managed to get it to show but still can not do anything with it..

Out of warranty.

Whats inside ? Is it worth picking up an OEM drive and replacing it ??

What model would i have to get though ???

Cheers

On a side note, we've had a number of seagates fail, external and internal.

To replace it but keep the caddy, any Sata of the same spec will do, my personal preference these days are western digital

Yea. Looking for deals now mate. It was red hot coming out of the case.

If you spot any 1Tb or over lmk.

Cheers

There is one thing you could try, but doing this will wipe everything off the hard drive.

Do a low level format and then format normally, THIS is a free tool for low level formatting.

“STOP”
Do not format your drive just yet…there are loads of things that could be causing your problem and running seatools from within windows will not tell you anything unless you are already sure that you have a faulty drive.
Your problem may be any of the following…
Bad drivers or software related issue.
Motherboard fault
Power supply fault
Faulty hard drive controller (circuit board inside caddie )
Faulty caddie power supply (if separate)
Faulty hard drive controller (circuit board attached to drive )
Faulty hard drive.

As I stated earlier to be sure that the problem is with the external drive and not with your pc try connecting it to another pc (I noticed in your first post that you had reinstalled windows, presumably this was because you were having problems…these problems may be related)
Once you are sure that the problem is with the drive and not with the pc then try removing it from its caddy and fit it as an internal drive in your pc… if this works then the problem is with the caddy if not then the fault is with the drive or its controller
If you come to the conclusion that the problem is with the drive or its controller then leave the drive connected internally to your pc and try to repair or format it…. Personally I would try to repair it first as you may still be able to save your data. hddregenerator or spinrite will often be able to recover a damaged drive without data loss.
If you have tried the above and the drive still does not work then it still may be repairable by repairing or replacing the controller... but probably not worth the hassle.

P.S. In reply to your earlier question… if you reinstalled windows using a backup image then all of the correct drivers should be installed however if you reinstalled windows using a windows disk then you will usually have to install the correct drivers manually , even if they appear ok as Microsoft often installs the wrong ones.
