i have my neighbours laptop and it is stuck on PXE-E61, PXE ROM during bootup. i cant reinstall vista because the laptop powers down about 30 secs into the install, ive tried different discs, same story.

Check the boot priority in the BIOS.

  • If the hard drive isn't in the list then it's worth removing and reseating the hard drive. Though the likelihood is it has failed, it is also worth checking it in another machine to make sure.
  • If it is in the boot list make it the primary boot device. For now, also disconnect any USB, firewire (iLink) or ExpressCard devices and remove any memory cards from the card reader.

still no joy, i got a stage further during the reinstallation of vista and it said it couldn't find a hard drive. can you buy any sata hard drive or do you need a specific model

got my hard drive today and for the first time i saw the hard drive light flashing on the laptop. got 4/5ths of the way through the install and the laptop switched off. now the laptop is now randomly switching off.WTF

update, i've just realised that the fan on the underside of the laptop isnt turning. now theres no display at all on the laptop. if i replace the fan do you think the laptop will fire up or do you think its ran for too long without the fan.

Going back to your original post the PXE-E61, PXE ROM was a boot drive issue. However, the powering down may have been an over heating or thermal protection cut out from the fan failure.

It may have been accidentally toggled to external monitor, try [Fn]+[F5] a few times to cycle through the options. If that doesn't work, you could try hooking up an external monitor to see if it's the graphics chip or just the laptop's display - just don't leave it running for long with the fan not working.

tried the f5+fn no joy. also tried hooking the laptop up to an external monitor. nothing. i've spent enough time and money on this, i really cant be arsed spending much more time and money.replacing the fan is a big job. but i cant hand the neighbour a fooked laptop and say thats 35 quid you owe me.

what can u do?

this is the problem with laptops, repairs costs often outstrip their value. Your only other option is to try get a scrap one from ebay, see if u can salvage some parts.

or take the hit, keep the harddisk and chalk it up to experience. i've had to do that in the past

This is why friends' requests for me to just "just take a look at" their PCs/laptops are now denied.

It's amazing how a reinstall turns into three Saturday afternoons.

stripped the laptop down today, the fan is working. but the laptop is still powering down after about 5 seconds then switching itself on then off again. anyone got any ideas. it has an amd turion processor.

Can you clarify switching off? Is it powering down properly (as if you pressed the power switch), just turning off as if you removed the power and battery or going into standby/hibernate?

When you stripped it down did you remove the CPU/GPU heatsink? If so did you remove the old thermal pads and replace with new ones or thermal paste?

If there is more than one stick of RAM installed take one out and see if it'll stay powered on. Test all RAM sticks and memory banks. Download and run Memtest86+.

Try an ATX reset: Turn laptop off, remove battery and unplug from mains. Press and hold the power button for approx 30 seconds. Plug back into mains and reinsert battery. Power on.

bit the bullet and gave it back to the neighbour. managed to get it back to its original state, i kept the hard drive. thats me done with laptops, i f**cking think they are nasty cheap pieces of crap.
