    Unhappy Very ill laptop :(

I have an Acer (Windows 7) that is incredibly ill at the moment. It boots up to the user screen, but after that it bluescreens every time!

It will boot into safe mode, and occasionally into safe mode with networking but nothing else.

When it first happened I did manage to get it to boot up and I got the error message that C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Q72RV04V14.DLL was missing.

Now when I have had a missing dll before I have managed to download the same on from the internet, but on this occasion I can't find the offending dll.

    Anyone help at all?

Try a System Restore from safe mode or run sfc.exe

has it got a partion on the drive with the factory files on? so u can restore it to when it was first turned on? reboot it and quickly read the bottom off the screen to see what button is needed.

Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    sfc /scannow
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

To determine which files could not be repaired by the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
    Open an elevated command prompt.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt
Note The Sfcdetails.txt file contains details from every time that the System File Checker tool has been run on the computer. The file includes information about files that were not repaired by the System File Checker tool. Verify the date and time entries to determine the problem files that were found the last time that you ran the System File Checker tool.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    edit sfcdetails.txt
The Sfcdetails.txt file uses the following format:
    Date/Time SFC detail

Thanks. The thing is that I have got quite a lot of stuff on there that I'd prefer not to lose, so I'm hoping for a fix that'll enable me to do that.

    Re: Very ill laptop :(

The laptop is only a matter of a few months old. I got it off Amazon.
I know its under warranty but the thought of all of the hassle going down that route is off putting! I'd rather get it backed up and get a copy of Windows 7 from somewhere.

Unison, thanks for the very detailed reply. I'm going to print it off and give it a go.

Should all else fail are there any reliable copies of 7 anywhere?

    Re: Very ill laptop :(

it will have a recovery partition somewhere, if it's new, have a look thru your documentation and will tell you how to access it.

Failing that, google the model number and it will tell u how to access it. The recovery partition is different to system restore.
