Hi guys, my nephew cracked his netbook screen so i got a replacement (checked with suppler nd is correct one) & fitted it with no problem. Put it back together nd tried to boot it up. Goes just passed the hit f2 for bios then the flashing cursor top left then it switches off.

i thought it might need fully charging so i did this nd gave it back to my nephew, he had the same problem a couple of times but then it did just boot up ok nd work for a while? (until it lost its charge, typical kids they never think to charge things up do they)

problem is now it just does as stated at top of post every time i try nd power it up. I was thinking perhaps i have done something wrong when cliping the screen cover back on? is there a little switch or something that tells the netbook to shutdown when you put the lid down, ie does it now think that the lid is shut when it isnt???

any ideas, i have taken the screen cover off & carnt see anything obvious that i have done wrong.

cheers

steve......

ps dont think its bios as i can hit f2 nd it goes to the bios screen but then the 10 seconds or so is up so it shuts down. Aslo i can press alt f10 nd the message starting windows files etc comes up but at the 10 second point off it goes..... 8-(

sounds more like something up with the software (operating system like windows xp or whatever)

try a reinstall?

cheers for the info but as i said, it turns itself of after about 10 seconds. It would be a bit of a backwards step but i might try putting the old cracked screen back in & see if the problem goes away?

keep you posted......

So have followed youtube video & taken the thing to bits. removed hdd (blow nd replace) remove ram (blow nd replace) then put the old cracked screen back in. put all back together and AAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHH! still only powers up for about 10 seconds before shutting itself off.

have put the new screen back in & as i am confident that is ok.

going to leave it for tonight as am getting a bit frustrated with it now.

hopefully one of you guys can help me with this as i am now at a loss...

cheers

steve.....

take the battery out and the power out and hold the power button for 30 seconds
replace the battery and see if it still does the same

yes, i read that on the acer website. tried it a couple of times, ie 30 seconds & then 1 minute. It did maybe stay on for a few more seconds but that could be just me.

Im not sure about the heatsink? sorry if im being stupid but where would that be? behind the screen? carnt remember seeing a heatsink?

thanks guys.......

on the underside of the board.what dibb is getting at is could it be over heating .as it sounds like a over heating problem take the bottom plastics off and check fans are kicking in and all heatsinks as seated right

ic, thanks for clearing that up..... didnt think there would be a heatsink behind the screen...lol i will take it apart again tomorow & have a look for the heatsink/s nd check they are positioned correctly, i did blow the dust out of the little fan when i checked the hdd nd ram though.

thanks again & i will keep you posted.....

was just wondering, don't sweat if you haven't touched it, to remove the screen on mine, well to get to the screws i have to lift the heat sink off the board and total dismantle it, was just wondering if you A) plugged the fan back in, B) re-applied some heat sink paste, but by the sounds of it you haven't touched it in the 1st place mate....

no worries, was not much effort to replace the screen, only a couple of screws on the bottom of the screen then the 4 screws holding the screen in. Only took the back off to check the connections of the hdd & ram.

it did power up once with no problems so i am still thinking there must be some little plastic bit somewhere that is not seated right & it thinks that the screen lid is shut when it is not. Like when you close the lid it normally switches its self off.

I carnt seem to find it though......lol

UPDATE.......

it's a strange one this, managed to get it to power up a couple of times thismorning. The only way i can do this is to pop in a usb stick (sandisk 8gb, has bootable win7 on it atm) and pretend i am doing a bios update, ie press fn + esc then power button. when the screen flashes with something like system info release the fn+esc and yep up she comes.

this has to be a coincidence doesnt it?

had a quick check in device manager & no conflicts.

have to out now so am going to leave it pluged in & just close the lid, ie sleep mode. then when i get back see if it comes back out of sleep mode. is running win 7 32bit ultimate btw.

then should i think about a bios update? i have v1.06 atm & think latest is v3.x

think you can do a bios update from within windows?
dont want to risk it with the fn*esc incase it shutsdown while flashing....

keep you posted.....

ps another lovelly sunny day up here in the north east, shame i have to goto the metro centre though.....8-( hate shopping!

cheers
