problems so far.....
my son's dell dimension desktop stopped booting up, it does not even get to the windows splash screen then reboots itself. I put original disk back in and done both a dskchk /r and fixboot, the machine would boot after this but then if rebooted would not work. eventually managed to get what uni work I could off it for him and reformatted drive and reinstalled windows, was working ok last night and this morning then he had to download an update for office to allow him to open stuff done on another version and when he rebooted now have blue screen of death with stop error.
I have tried to repair disk but will not boot at all so wondering if it is the hard drive so opened up to try another hard drive in but it only takes sata drives and I do not have a spare one and don't want to buy in case it is not the HD.
anyone any ideas if it looks like the HD...?
there are no noises coming from HD

thanks

im guessing its a HDD failure.

from the sound of it the lovvable "unmounable_boot_volume" error.. meaning a failed HDD..

some stop errors also equate to this..

can only suggest a new hdd im afraid...

Can you get to the install stage where you can format the drive? If so, split it into 2 partitions, install on the first and see how it goes, if it fails to reboot, install on the second and try. Failing that, it could be the controller board of the drive/mobo or perhaps even RAM?

thanks, when i reformatted I made a partition so he could save all his uni work to there i will try installing windows on this partition and see how it goes. brother-in-law is giving me a spare sata HDD so i will also try that whenever he gets it to me, just did not want to buy one if this was not the problem.
