Hi all, my lads acer 6930 (vista ) loads up ok but after a while it just locks up with the spinning blue circle and it will not respond to any keyboard commands.
Even ctrl alt del doesn't work and to escape i have to remove the battery.
It came preinstalled with Norton and is up to date with Microsoft updates.
I have ran antivirus programmes , spyware progs, cccleaner , defraggler etc but nothing shows up as a problem.
He returns to Uni soon to retake his failed exams from year 2 (muppet )

Any help guys please. !

you only have a three options

1, re-install vista or run recovery on the disk
2, get yourself a copy of windows 7
3, go back to XP

personnel i would go with option 2

Thanks Napster, if i run recovery on the disk will he lose all the work / pics /music etc?

Or should i just try to grab what i can in safe mode to an ext hdd ?
Thanks for your help m8.

Try a system restore in safe mode.

Also try running chkdsk and sfc

P.S. Always wise to regularly backup any work ( sentimental pics ) etc to a pen drive or the like.

Will he lose anything with this ?
He has about 100 gig of "valuable files"

its always best to save your stuff first, when you do a restore it shouldn't lose you stuff be you can never be 100% better save than sorry.

Sounds like the hardware is OK. You can use a WinPE boot DVD (something like HawkPE) which will boot into a windows type environment. You can then copy all the data from the laptop to USB or network location.

Alternativily pull the hard drive out and attach to a desktop to access the data. Most laptops switched over to SATA drives a few years ago and the connectors are the same as desktop drives.

If the laptop has at least 2 gb ram, I would go with the option of upgrading to Windows 7 if you can. Of course you/him will need to reinstall all the apps as well on top of O/S.

What I also suggest is in future, set up a non-administrator account for day to day logons. Save admin for when you need to add hardware/apps.
