Hi guys
My daughter has a problem with her PC. The only way that she can shut down her machine is to pull the plug.
When she restarts her PC at a later date it takes several mins while a disk is checked. I've tried a couple of restore points but they both failed. Anyone out there got any ideas whats wrong?
I would be very grateful.
Cheers

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER pull the plug on a PC.

If your desktop, or laptop machines stops responding, push the power button in and keep it held in for 5 - 10 seconds.

If you kill the power by pulling the plug, there is a very high likelihood that you will knacker the hard drive.

The read/write head could be part-way through an operation and this could result in a crash against the platter/s contained within the hard drive.

As W said, better backing up & reinstalling than wasting hours upon hours of troubleshooting :)

Hi Fireblade...that's a worst case scenario, but I've seen it happen on a few occasions.

If the machine doesn't shutdown "gracefully", then the risks of a corrupt hard drive are heightened.

The information on the hard drive can sometimes be retrieved, but it depends on various factors such as:

Actual physical damage to the drive.
Amount of data corruption.
How much you are willing to pay to get the data back.

(there are a few good utilities out there which can reclaim files from knackered drives...some of them free if you know where to look :) )

As I said, it's a worse case scenario, so most people will experience nothing more than a Scandisk at start-up :)

yeah i posted about this the other day about not being able to close down and notbeing able to restart and after lots of reading and messing on with the registry and that looks like maybe a format and re-install for me as well (go check out the other posts by me)

One way that you can shut it down (mine takes ages and still runs a scan disk everytime it starts)

Open CTR+ALT+DEL

Bring up task manager and then go to shut down along the top.

Mine eventjually shuts down.

(i found that ticking the little box on all the usb devices Hubs etc and unticking the little "allow windows to shut down this device to save power)

Works a little bit.

Good luck but as i say i'm out of ideas and a format is going to happen for me.

Thank's for the input gents. I'll make sure that she saves any files that she needs and then I'll reset to factory defalt.
Cheers.

also sound blaster PCi cards used in conjunction with nvidia cards use to cause this problem

you can actually change the time out feature within xp to shiut down the computer as most of the time it is about killing processes and waiting for them to respond

Make Windows XP Shut Down Faster :: Mysticgeek’s Realm

Thank's Ephidor
I followed instruction on Mysticgeek's Realm and then after restart the PC closed down. Hopefully it will continue to work as I have only tried it once.
Cheers
