Hi all, ive been given a friends laptop to put him some internet security on which i was planning to do when i stumbled upon this problem...

his laptop had a password so i tried to force it to boot in safe mode, firstly by hitting the usual keys (f's) in order to get a boot screen after that didnt work i tried removing all power once it was at login to force it to ask me a boot option, still didnt work. so i tried again with the 'F' keys when the thing decided to stop turning its monitor on.

all lights are on as usual, hdd is spinning, fans are on and no display. i've tried combinations of battery and power supply in and out, i've unplugged/replugged the bios battery from the memory hatch (this is a Samsung X11 by the way) and im still getting nowhere. I've also tried hitting the Fn keys to switch displays and connected my pc monitor which it will not power either!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thankfully i sorted it on my own, even though removing and reconnecting the bios battery did nothing it worked so long as I booted the laptop without the bios battery then turned it back off again and reconnected

did a similar thing with a packard laptop a few weeks ago - tip is not to press any fn keys which alter display mode unless you like taking laptops apart to get to the bios battery - getting into safe mode can be awkward but should have been able to do... - I use a bootable cd to re-set unknown passwords which doesn't need safe mode (when people give you a laptop to fix and then forget to give you their password) Also if you remove the hard drive from a laptop then system restore is disabled....Strange that you had to boot without the bios battery but that could be a good tip to remember
