I have a Toshiba external hard drive only about two years old and it seems to be corrupt . Pc won't recognize it now. Everytime i turn it on pc looks for a driver for it but i can't find a driver for it or none came with it .

I think xp supposed to have a driver built in for this. Is it USB?? Try plugging it in another port. usually sorts most USB issues

I tried everything , i have been reading so much about trying to bring a hard drive back from the dead and i was reading that some people had good success by putting it into a freezer for a few hours, i even tried that and still can't get it to work. I just want to be able to get back all my photographs that i have taken over the years. I know i could send it to one of those data recovery people but i couldn't afford to spend the money that they charge .

If it's asking you to format the drive when you open it then you need to run the command:

chkdsk E: /F

Or don't use E, use whatever letter the drive is. If you do that and files are missing, display hidden files and system files, they should be in folders in the root directory.

it mite be the board in the external drive bay thats faulty.try taking it out of the bay and plug it directly into your pc via the IDE/SATA interface. then right click mycomputer--->manage---->discmanagement and see if you can see it in there.
